Tyranny of the Minority: Why American Democracy Reached the Breaking Point by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt, 2023
I just finished this book. This is the second book by these two authors I've read. The previous one was How Democracies Die: What History Reveals About Our Future from 2018 which I read in February 2019.
This book is really a call for political reform before it's too late. Before America is no longer a democracy. Before America becomes an authoritarian dictatorship. It is a very revealing book. I found it to be heartbreaking and scary. It also made me angry. I was amazed at how flawed our constitutional system really is.
A few things need to be changed now.
No gerrymandering. Ever. By anyone. When a political district is drawn up no politician should have anything to do with the process. Districts should be made from existing municipal or geographic boundaries only.
The Electoral College should be eliminated. It exist only has a leftover from slavery days. All elections should be by popular vote.
The Senate should represent people and not states. The concept of two senate votes per state regardless of population is another slavery leftover. The idea that Wyoming and California have the same amount of senate votes despite the population differences is ridiculous. That is not democracy.
