Earlier this evening Becky and I decided to go out to dinner. We talked about several different restaurants and even made reservations for dinner at Roost for next Friday night but after considering a few places we agreed on going over to Shango, one of our favorite restaurants. We hadn't been there since some time earlier this past summer.
We got there about 5:30 and were somewhat surprised that we were the first customers. They open at 5 pm. We got nice seats in the dining room in front of the window to Main Street. The waitress went over the specials with us but we had our hearts set on a couple of po boy sandwiches. Becky ended up ordering a shrimp po boy and I ordered a catfish po boy. We've had them both many times and we love them. I also ordered a cup of gumbo which I always get every time we go to Shango. I also got a West Coast IPA from Green Flash Brewery. Becky got a Sam Adams NA which she said was very good. Later on I also got a Pilsner Urquell which came in one of those fancy fat beer glasses.
Our food was wonderful as usual and the waitress was great. It was a little weird that it turned out we were the only customers in the restaurant the whole time we were there. We left a 7:30 pm so that was about two hours. Where was everybody? We have been to Shango many many times and we've never seen it empty like this. The bartender and waitresses didn't know what was going on. They said they were busy earlier in the week and have been regularly the past month or so. Tonight seemed to them to be highly unusual. We joked about it a little but I felt bad for them. They make their money with tips and they certainly weren't getting them at that time... except for us. I tipped our waitress a little extra.
Well, we had a great time and a very nice time at one of favorite places to have some dinner despite the quiet night. BTW, the sound system was playing a great assortment of New Orleans based music throughout the time we were there as usual.
