Yes, finally a nice day. A day more like what we expected for Fall in Philadelphia. We've been traveling this time of year to visit family for decades. We have usually gone down there in October around the long weekend for Columbus Day because of the kids having some extra time off from school. Then it was just habit. October was always nice. This year we had to go in September because of our need to be there for Scott's memorial service on September 28th. We would be down for one day in October this year. We didn't usually drive down in September.
Well, we still didn't expect a week of bad weather for our trip. It wasn't bad driving down but then a tropical storm came up the east coast and dumped lots of rain and bad weather. The temperatures were on the cold side too all week. We had expected to spend a lot of time with the kids doing things outside like going to the zoo, the area playgrounds, hike around the Wissahickon, the botanical gardens, walking the neighborhood, playing in the backyard, etc. We stayed in the house most of the time.
It wasn't too bad for our drive out to Lancaster for the memorial service but that was about the only half way decent weather all week. However, it still rained in Philly that day.
So finally on our last day in town the weather improved. It was a beautiful day and we spent the morning at the Mt Airy Village Fair. We had a great time. It was also the first day of October. After lunch we hung out with the kids first on the front porch and then in the backyard.
We had brought a backyard game for the kids that had been sitting in an upstairs bedroom closet for a couple of decades. It was a ring toss game that someone had given to Katie and Sean but when they had outgrown playing in the backyard. All week it was too nasty outside to play in the backyard until Saturday. I got the ring toss out of the car and set it up in the yard. Henry and Clara immediately started playing it and kept at it for awhile. They really enjoyed themselves. Maybe it was just being able to play in the backyard again.
