We drove home on Monday. It had been a long ten days and we were exhausted. Fortunately we had a beautiful day to drive and we made good time although we didn't leave until about 10 am which meant we would get to Buffalo during the afternoon rush hour. We usually left a little earlier and avoided that traffic by getting into town around 3 pm. Not this time.
On our way home we always drive straight through from Philly to Buffalo as we have done for over 40 years. It's the other way driving into Philly to Katie's house at the end of the day around rush hour that we have recently avoided by staying at a motel half way on the trip.
The weather was fine heading into Western New York but the traffic was picking up as we approached Buffalo nearing five o'clock. We considered the possibility of getting off the thruway earlier at Transit and then taking Main Street into the city but that would add some considerable amount of time although would be less stressful. We decided to keep going and we got to that crowded and complicated 90/290 interchange right at 5 pm and it was certainly dense traffic. However, from the far right lane we were able to merge across the lanes in the direction of the 33 and we were fortunate that there were enough drivers coming off the 290 wanting to merge left into the 90 that we were able to squeeze through to exchange places on the road. Amazingly we got through that interchange very quickly and then on to the 33 which was actually the opposite of the main traffic full of cars leaving the city for the suburbs. It only took us about ten minutes to get from that big high traffic exchange to our house. So it was about 5:15 when we got home. It was very warm and sunny.
We finished unpacking the car around 6 pm and decided to go out for dinner. Normally Becky would have gone out to the supermarket after getting home earlier in the afternoon but not this time but that's another story. Tonight it was back to The Steer.
