Winter Olympics 2022

We've been watching the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics over the past few days and it has been somewhat strange. Partly because there are no crowds and the only people cheering the athletes are their teammates. Another odd thing is that none of the venues where there is any skiing have any natural snow. It's weird to see the surrounding countryside and mountains

with no snow. Everyone not actually competing at the moment is wearing a mask and the athletes are all completely segregated from the general public. There is no interaction with anyone. Nobody from the Chinese public are anywhere near the Olympic Village due to Covid protocols.

So far we've been seeing a lot of curling. Too much curling actually. Lots of luge and bobsled racing too. Now we're starting to see some figure skating and downhill skiing. We watched some speed skating today.

The summer Olympics in Tokyo last year were also full of extraordinary circumstances due to the pandemic and also a very intense heatwave.  They were played a year later than scheduled because of the virus so they were in July 2021 rather than 2020. Here is what I wrote about it then... Olympics - Climate and Plague.

The Olympics have been on NBC and their related stations. Originally we were able to see the games on USA that we had available on Sling TV but it wasn't enough. Most of the coverage was on NBC's streaming service... Peacock TV. Earlier this week I added Peacock to our service. I did already have the free service but in order to get the Olympic coverage a user needs Peacock Plus. Well, without ads in the programming you need to get Peacock Plus Premium so that is what we now have. Of course there is a disclaimer that some network programs in their live feeds will have commercials and the first thing I found out is that the Olympic coverage is full of ads. There are a lot more movies and TV series on the service so I'm expecting that there will be no ads there but the Olympics are full of them.
