Readings 2016 - Nonfiction

I think my favorite nonfiction book this year was M Train by Patti Smith. This is the second of her personal memoirs I've read and I should probably read a regular biography of her some time soon. Another good music memoir was the Elvis Costello book which I enjoyed very much.

Probably the other favorite book was Ta-Nehisi Coates' amazing Between the World and Me which was a fascinating look at race relations in America.

So Trump got elected to the shock and surprise of everyone including himself and I spent much of November and December reading books (mostly novels) to try and forget about the disaster that had befallen on our country. I did read a few political books during the year.

I also enjoyed that biography of Budweiser beer and the one about Bush too.

  1. M Train - Patti Smith, 2015
  2. Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right - Jane Mayer, 2016
  3. Between the World and Me - Ta-Nehisi Coates, 2015
  4. Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink - Elvis Costello, 2015
  5. Who Rules the World? - Noam Chomsky, 2014
  6. Bitter Brew: The Rise and Fall of Anheuser-Busch and America's Kings of Beer - William Knoedelseder, 2012
  7. Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy - Cathy O'Neil, 2016
  8. Enemies: A History of the FBI - Tim Weiner, 2012
  9. The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945 - Rick Atkinson, 2013
  10. Do No Harm: Stories of Life, Death and Brain Surgery - Henry Marsh, 2014
  11. Bush - Jean Edward Smith, 2016

Readings 2016 - Fiction

 Novels of 2016

This was a year full of science fiction with some detective novels thrown in. It looks like 25 of the 28 novels would be considered science fiction or fantasy. The only others were the first three on the list. The latest Philip Kerr and Benjamin Black books and the very intense historical novel The Book Thief.

I read some interesting new science fiction this year including Zone One, Bird Box, The Circle, The Water Knife and City of Mirrors. I read a couple of classics... Dan Simmons' Hyperion and Philip K. Dick's The Man in the High Castle.

And then there were the series. Several of them. None of them were particularly outstanding but they were good enough to keep me coming back for more. All had long involved plot lines across many books. Overall an unusual collection of books this year.

Christmas 1986

This is me and Katie on Christmas morning 1986. Almost thirty years ago. She was just two and a half. This would be our first Christmas in our new house on Shirley Avenue. We had recently moved there in the fall.

We lived in that house a little over ten years. We loved that house and it was easy to maintain. Had some great parties in that house too.

We spent a month doing some work on the house before we moved in. There was some really awful colored paneling everywhere throughout the house. I tore it all out and then we painted the walls mostly white before installing a lot of artwork. It was a lot of hard work because the panels were glued to the walls and then I had to scrape the excess glue off before painting the wall. It took us almost a month but we did not want to live with that paneling. I had all that paneling piled by the sidewalk for the trash trucks to pick up.

A few years later I was talking with the guy across the street and he said something about me not liking the paneling in the house. It turned out he bought that house from the previous family when the older person alone in the house passed away and he installed all that paneling before he sold the house... to us. We didn't know we had bought it from him. He was so proud of that paneling and thought he made the house so much better and then he saw us come by before even moving in and throwing all of his hard work out on the street for the trashmen.

Vinyl Spins - Peel Slowly

The Velvet Underground & Nico, 1967

Listening to some Velvet Underground up on the 3rd floor today. This was another high school record. I got this album at a head shop in Philly just after the 1967 summer of love. The contents of this album were not really that kind of love.

I saw the Velvet Underground perform in a park "be-in" in 1968 a few months after I had bought this record. I had made my way to the stage but was very disappointed when there was no Nico performing. The sound was terrible and I wandered off not realizing what a rare event I had been witnessing. They were also playing mostly songs from what I would later realize was their new album White Light White Heat and in retrospect I should have stayed as close to the stage as possible. A few years later I saw Lou Reed at the Main Point in Philly when I was home for Christmas right after Transformer was released in 1972 and then again the following May in Norfolk with that great touring band from Rock 'n' Roll Animal. RIP Lou Reed.

BTW, I am still pissed off at my stoned friend who peeled the banana during a party at my house in 1974. I also later learned that only the first pressings of the original LP had the actual peel me banana cover like this one.

Mixtapes

Up on the 3rd floor. Boxes of cassette tapes. Hundreds of mixes. Decades of mix making. Vinyl to tape.

I was always a mix maker. I love albums but have always wanted to listen to songs from many albums mixed together in a way I liked. Although I made occasional mixtapes throughout the 1970's for special events and parties, my really serious mix making began after we moved to Buffalo in 1979 and we started making several trips back to Philadelphia each year. I hated listening to the radio on long road trips in the car and quickly began assembling mixes to play along the way. I also put many records on cassette tape over the years for listening convenience but my heart was in the mix tapes. I was never one of those people who would tape songs and albums off the radio.

I had a very specific mix making process and I also have a box of notebooks on the 3rd floor filled with mix tape listings and ideas. I would start a mix tape by collecting a group of albums and stack them next to the stereo which consisted of a turntable, receiver, cassette tape recorder and head phones. I would set up a blank tape, cue up a song from an album, carefully set the sound levels and then push the record button after dropping the needle at the right place. I always loved the sound of the needle hitting the record while wearing headphones. It was the start of something beautiful.. the thump and then some silence before the music started.

Working on mixes was my way of relaxing after a long workday or some quiet time after the kids had gone to bed. A child running across the room causing a record skip while recording drove me nuts which can't be helped and was why I often waited late into the evening to make my mixes. I usually bought 90 minute cassettes and recorded two approximately 45 minute sides. Longer 120 minute tapes tended to have a higher failure rate having something to do with the loosening of the longer tape on the spindles. 60 minute tapes were too short so 90 was the sweet spot.

Another important aspect of the process was knowing the playing length of each song to ensure the best use of the space on the tape. In a notebook somewhere I always had a list of short songs that could be used at the end of a mix to fill in some time.

So the songs were carefully selected by a combination of feel, flow, genre, and mood among other things. I would very seldom accomplish this in one sitting and the making of a mixtape could often take days or weeks. Occasionally I would have an almost complete set in mind prior to beginning recording but most of the time it was a long process. It was my down time but also accomplished something useful.

I would also sometimes have more than one tape in progress at the same time but not usually. It was always a satisfying moment when a mix was completed but there were often many times when a mix would end up getting re-edited with multiple changes. The notebooks have documented those changes over time. They would also illustrate the progress of the mix and my current notebook would always be nearby the stereo setup.

All these years later I'm still making mixes and looking forward to many more during my retirement years that began recently.

Vinyl Spins - Bitches Brew

I was recently listening to some Miles Davis albums while enjoying one of my favorite dark beers Bitches Brew by Dogfish Head Brewery. In 1970 I saw him perform the music of this album at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago along with several rock bands. I was really surprised by the intensely loud wall of sound coming from his band and especially from the many keyboard and percussion players. It was a revelation and I had to go and find out more about this electric Miles which of course also eventually led me to Jack Johnson, In a Silent Way, On the Corner, etc. etc. and the more recent released "Complete" box sets of those albums.

Moscow on the Potomac

And the party of Reagan cheered him on as the narcissistic plutocrat praised the help he got from the Russians. He'll do anything to get that hotel in Moscow or build that golf course in Siberia.

Putin will play him like the ignorant patsy he really is. Putin's puppet. Chosen by the Russians to be our next president. Disgusting.

Snowy Monday Morning

The first snowy Monday morning of our retirement... a comfy sweater, a pot of tea, a good book and some of Becky's freshly baked banana walnut muffins.

It certainly feels good to not need to think about going out in the snow in the morning to go to work. Over the years I was always the closest person living near the campus and would always be expected to open the library despite the weather conditions. Even when the campus was closed and classes were cancelled we needed to get the library open because there were so many students living on campus. Since I could walk to work I was the one. It was also because I was responsible for the building and in charge of the staff that needed to open the building. Well, it was usually me. I was close by. Not any more.

I don't even have to think about opening the library on a snowy Monday morning. Nice. I'm liking this retirement.

Vinyl Spins - The Kink Kronikles and Compilations

Greatest hits and other compilations.

I always loved a good greatest hits compilations and many of my early album purchases were collections such as Jimi Hendrix's Smash Hits, The Four Seasons' Golden Vaults and many Motown hits packages. The Kink Kronikles, released in 1972, was a different kind of compilation and quickly became one of my favorite all time albums.

The Kinks had switched to a new record company and their old label released this album compiled by a group of rock journalists specifically for the American market. The album's unique perspective reflects it's creation and does not contain many of the early standard songs from their Greatest Hits album but does provide songs from 1966 to 1971 including some previously unreleased tracks.

I don't think there were many compilation albums released in the 60's and 70's that contained this kind of view of a artist or group using non-hits and unreleased material. That would happen later with the introduction of multiple disc box sets in the late 80's followed by the many deluxe reissue sets of the 90's and beyond. I got hooked then and now.

Glass of Beer - Three Philosophers

Shoveled some snow, made a mix and now it's time to finish this fine brew while watching some Mozart in the Jungle. Ommegang is one of my favorite breweries and I love everything they make. This is a new version of their Three Philosophers Belgian Quadrupel Ale brewed with strawberries and cranberries. Tasty.

Trying to grok it again - Stranger in a Strange Land

Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein, 1961

I first read this in April 1975. I've decided to revisit some of the books that I read in my twenties that I think influenced me and to see how they hold up. I had always kept track of my readings in notebooks and then had transferred the lists to documents on my computers. I was eventually able to have a fairly accurate list of my readings from about 1970 that I could add to Good Reads. So now I'm going back and looking at some of those books.

I started this re-reading project scanning my Good Reads list and my book shelves. I've always been a big science fiction fan and Stranger In A Strange Land by Robert Heinlein and is considered a classic. I saw that it was available from the public library as an e-book and immediately downloaded it. I first read this book in the early 70's while stationed on board a Navy ship. Science fiction paperbacks were traded throughout the ship while we were at sea and I read several of Heinlein's earlier books. This book was a lot different.

Later I read it a second time in 1976 along with many more of Heinlein's later books. I just recently finished reading it again some 40 years later and what did I think? First of all it felt very dated and actually had some very cringe worthy moments.

Vinyl Spins - First Reggae

It was cold up on the third floor today but I got some work done while spinning the hot reggae sounds of The Harder They Come soundtrack album featuring Jimmy Cliff released in 1972. This was the first of many reggae albums I would own on vinyl. I saw the film in a neighborhood repertory theater, the Band Box, in 1973 with some friends and then went looking for the album.

I came to love the reggae sounds and built a large collection on vinyl and eventually CDs. In the mid to late 70’s we regularly saw Jamaican reggae bands play live at Grendel’s Lair on South Street in Philly where we spent many long sweaty smoke filled nights on the dance floor. Also one of the highlights of my live music experiences was seeing Bob Marley and the Wailers in concert.

I had made several cruises to the Caribbean islands during my time in the Navy including Jamaica. I heard and saw a lot of calypso, ska and other good time island sounds available to the tourist and servicemen but no dreadlocks, spliffs or hard trance reggae dub beats.

Four Generations

Katie with her mother, her grandmother and her great-grandmother. Philadelphia, Spring 1985. In the backyard of the house on Evergreen Avenue, Chestnut Hill.

Four generations of moms.

There was a container full of toys in the living room in a vinyl covered foot stool that we played with when we were kids. Katie sat there on the floor that day and played with the same toys.

Vinyl Spins - Album Cover

I think this is the only album I’ve ever purchased where I knew nothing about the band, the producer or anything else other than I liked the cover. The Chocolate Watchband’s The Inner Mystique, released in 1968, was their second album and would eventually be considered a classic of garage rock and psychedelia.  I bought this album in one of those small head shops that were popular back in 1968 that also sold a few albums along with the bongs, scarfs, posters and incense. So I was browsing the album bin and came across this one. I must have been stoned or something. Later I probably spent too much time pondering the list of dedications on the back cover.

This became one of my favorite albums of the period and I always carried it around with me when I was spinning records in bars during the 80's for my 60's nights.

An interesting note about this album is that the original band from their first album only played on side two here and also only played garage band style cover songs. The spacey psychedelic songs on the first side were performed by the producer and session players. It all sounded good.

Med Cruise 1972

Last week I found this book while going through some boxes up on the third floor storage area. I hadn't seen this in decades. A sort of yearbook for one of the many cruises I embarked on during my four years serving in the Navy.
