New Studio Chair

Becky went online and ordered a new chair for her studio this week and it promptly arrived. It's amazing how long her chairs in the studio have lasted. She has several of them and some are leftovers from when she held classes for students in her studio. Some of those chairs had originally been in the Canisius College Library which I had acquired when they were discarded during a building renovation in the late 1990's. They go back several decades before then.

So she finally ordered a nice new comfortable chair which was delivered to the house. I decided to put it partially together at home and then bring it over to the studio for the final assembly. I opened the box and assembled some of the parts like the foot rest and the wheel and leg assembly.

I placed the various pieces and parts in several smaller boxes that Becky could take over to the studio. Then a couple of days later I came over with her and brought the large parts. I got the whole thing put together in less than an hour. It was actually fairly easy with good instructions and tools that came with the chair. Now Becky has a new comfortable chair for her studio work space.

Melanie RIP

I was very sad to just hear about the passing of the singer Melanie. I had always been very fond of her and her music. I especially loved her song Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) that she did with the Edwin Hawkins Singers. A classic. She did some nice covers too including Ruby Tuesday. There were a few songs here and there that I didn't care that were big radio hits like Brand New Key but overall I loved her work.

I saw her perform in 1970 in Chicago. If I remember right she opened up for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young at the Aragon Ballroom.

An Afternoon Winter Walk

Earlier today Becky and I took a walk around the neighborhood. This was our first walk since Christmas Day and of course that was the walk where I tripped over a small child and dislocated my shoulder. Today's walk was much more uneventful except for seeing some daffodils popping up out of the ground. After the walk we went into the backyard and saw lots of plants making an early appearance.

It has been raining the past few days on top of the snow that had accumulated since last week. Today was the first day that the sidewalks were actually clear of snow, ice and slush and the first opportunity to go for a walk. It wasn't too cold either with the temperature in the high 30's. It felt good to take that walk and my hip and shoulder cooperated with little or no pain. We thought it would be a good time to take that walk because the weather report for tomorrow calls for rain changing into snow throughout the day.

Next week should be good for walking almost every day and we are looking forward to it.

Julian - Book

Julian: Rome's Last Pagan Emperor by Philip Freeman, 2023. This book is part of the Ancient Lives series and tells the story of the tragic life of Julian, a nephew of Constantine The Great, and the last non-Christian emperor of Rome.

I was totally fascinated with this biography of Julian and his short life as a scholar, soldier and empire administrator. His brief two year reign as emperor was controversial. I was not familiar with him and only heard of him in passing or a footnote in some books I'd read on ancient Rome. He was mostly called Julian The Apostate but of course the history of Rome was written by Christian scholars. His attempt to rid the Roman Empire of Christian influence was an amazing story and that it occurred in the 360's after the reign of Constantine The Great where Christianity was made the state religion. Julian's goal was to bring back the religion of the old Roman gods. Christianity had become the religion of the ruling class of Rome but not the general public who were still basically pagan. He really could have changed history had it not been for a random Persian spear. The author's judicious use of original contemporary sources was very interesting.

I've always enjoyed reading histories and especially books about ancient Rome, Greece, Byzantium, Persia, China, India, the Aztecs, etc. I haven't read an ancient history book in awhile except some recent books about pre-Columbian Native Americans.

Gore Vidal wrote a novel about the life of Julian The Apostate in 1964. The novel was simply titled Julian.

Chamber Music Concert for January

Last night Becky and I went down to Kleinhans Music Hall for another Buffalo Chamber Music Society concert in the Mary Seaton Room. It's great having the season tickets because it makes you get out and see a show even on a rainy/snowy night when you might be inclined to just stay put. I kind of felt that way last night especially with my sore shoulder and hip but it was certainly worth it to make that effort and we got to see a wonderful concert.

There was an unusual group, Frautschi, Manasse, Nakamatsu Trio, playing last night that consisted of violin, clarinet and piano. They were all fantastic musicians with amazing backgrounds and they all played wonderfully. The program included pieces by Debussy, Chopin, Stravinsky and a couple contemporary composers. The violin and clarinet players were incredible and the pianist performed an truly wonderful Chopin piece.

My shoulder and hip problems did not bother at all during the concert which made me very happy. However, there was a group of friends sitting in the row in front of us and the person directly in front of me turned out to probably be a not very interested in chamber music person who spent the entire concert knitting something and all the while squirming in her seat and bobbing her head back and forth. She was truly aggravating but fortunately I was able to concentrate on the performances and for the most part ignored her spastic behavior. I had glanced around the room and noticed that everyone sat very still concentrating on the music but this person was obviously out of her element and probably there because a friend had given her a ticket.

It was a very rainy night when we driving to the concert with some poor visibility. We parked in our usual spot around the corner from the music hall and walked over. There was a lot of snow on the ground and we had to be careful. Lots of very deep puddles too because of the rain and the melting snow. After the show we needed to be careful walking because of black ice but at least it had stopped raining. It was a lot more pleasant driving home and we come up Elmwood Avenue. We got home around 10 pm and hung out for awhile relaxing in front of the TV.

The next concert in February is the Juillard String Quartet.

Bills Season Ends

The Buffalo Bills season came to an end last night with a missed field goal wide right.  It was actually a very exciting game with at least six lead changes but in the end the Chiefs were the better team. It was also more of a loss due to multiple factors and not just that missed field goal. There were plenty of dropped passes and bad plays to go around but there were also many exciting great performances too. It was a very entertaining game. Final score was Chiefs 27 and Bills 24.

Sean and Ashley were at the game and it was a tough loss for them. They left early in the 4th quarter because they wanted to get back to be with Autumn. They left her with us and were gone for eight hours. They watched the very end at our house after watching it on their phone on the way home.

Bills had a good season and it was amazing that won those five games in a row to get into the playoffs.

Autumn Weekend

We got a call earlier this from Sean giving us their plans for the Bills playoff game against the Chiefs in Buffalo. They decided that he and Ashley would come for the game and leave Andrew home with Ashley's dad. The would bring Autumn with them and leave her with us while they went to the game which was to start at 6:30 on Sunday.

We ended up having a wonderful time with little Autumn. They arrived at our house around 6:30 pm on Saturday evening. We had invited Dave and Donna along with Mary to stop by to see the baby. We ordered pizza from Romeo & Juliet's along with some cookies. Donna brought cookies too. We all had a nice evening together and it was fun seeing little Autumn who was just turning two months old.

Sean and Ashley stayed in the spare bedroom along with Autumn. We hung out together on Sunday morning. The game was starting at 6:30 and they wanted to get there a little early although they were not doing the regular tailgating. The did leave the house around 2:30 pm and it ended up taking them almost two hours to get into the stadium. They got home around 10:30 pm even though they left during the 4th quarter. We had 8 hours to hang out with Autumn and it was a great time. She was very good the entire time. She only fussed a very little bit and only cried briefly a couple of times. Mostly she laid on the floor playing with her baby stuff or cuddling on the couch with Becky. We carried her around the house for a bit but she mostly just wanted to sleep in one of our arms or lay there looking up at her Grammie. Becky a wonderful time feeding her the bottle of milk that Ashely made up ahead of time.

We had sent Sean and Ashley a couple of photos to them at the game of Autumn enjoying her bottle or sleeping nicely on the couch. We really had no trouble with her at all. When they came home Ashley took Autumn upstairs to nurse and to bed. They did not stay up long because they planned to leave very early the following morning. Sean wanted to be home by 11:00 am for an online work meeting. So they got up very early and were on the road around 6:30 am. We were missing her shortly after and we can't wait to spend time with them again. We miss Andrew too.

Mary Weiss RIP

I was very saddened to hear that Mary Weiss passed away yesterday. She was 75. I wrote here about my experience seeing her sing with The Shangri-Las in 1965 when I was 14 years old and she was 17. She made an impression and was my first rock and roll crush. Within a couple of years I was seeing more women singers that would get my attention like Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Joni Mitchell, Sandy Denny and the list would keep going on. But Mary Weiss was the first.

The Shangri-Las were playing at Lighthouse Field down on Erie Avenue during a carnival. They shared the bill with The Ronettes. This was my first concert. I went with some friends who were more interested in the carnival sideshows rather than the girl bands playing in the parking lot. I was there to see the bands. I loved both bands back in 1965.

All Night Long - Blues Night FV

The first in the Blues Night series. This mix covers all aspects of the blues from modern versions of the 2000's, sixties blues rock, and classic blues from the 1950's and 1960's. It's all mixed up nicely to flow through the different eras and styles.

I first heard some of the old guy blues when the Electric Factory in Philly often opened a rock show with an old classic blues player. Then in the late 1960's I started listening to white guy blues like Johnny Winter. Later in the mid 1970's we regularly listened to the WXPN blues show on Saturday nights.

I put this blues mix together a few years ago as a blues mega mix that ran for about 15 hours and had well over 200 songs. Well, this is back to my hour and a half mixes and is part of my Final Version series.

The blues music here is all over the place from various eras and styles. I love how it comes together and sounds like a blues party all night long indeed.

P.D.Q. Bach RIP

Peter Schickele, the man behind the fictional character P.D.Q. Back, died this week at the age of 88. He performed a satirical comedy routine and recorded albums that were a parody version of classical music. His first comedy album came out in 1965. He regularly released P.D.Q. Bach comedy albums over the next several years that I heard on the radio and on television. We used to see him on variety shows like The Smothers Brothers and late night shows like Johnny Carson. He dropped off my radar when I was in the Navy but apparently he kept doing performances and releasing albums over the next couple of decades. He received four Grammy Awards for Best Comedy Albums in the 1990's.

He made an impression on me back in 1965 when he burst on the music scene because at that time I was in high school and a member of the school band playing clarinet. Our music teachers and band conductors seemed to be upset with the P.D.Q. Bach concept because they were trying to teach us respect and serious understanding of classical music, standards, show tunes, etc. and he was all over the radio and television making fun of that music and being silly.

Now I could appreciate what he was doing because I was already a member of a Philadelphia Mummers String Band where there already was a healthy tradition of taking serious music and running with it all over the place with banjos and accordians. Mummers bands played all kinds of music and frequently mixed up classical and current popular music together along with silly costumes and routines. P.D.Q. Bach could have been a mummer.

Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen in Concert

Bruce Springsteen live at the Tower Theater on the Born To Run Tour. This was the sixth and final time I saw Bruce in concert and it was another three hour blast of  rock and roll.

The first time I saw him was in 1973 when he opened up for Jackson Browne at Villanova. John and I went to see JB and were surprised and amazed by Springsteen and his band. A few months later I was out of the Navy and got to see him play at the Main Point. It was really fun to see him play in a small club. Later in 1974 I would see him again at the Main Point, the Tower Theater and at Widener College. He was very popular in the Philly area. They were all great shows.

So why did I never go see him again. In 1976 I decided to stop going to large arena and stadium concerts and I have never gone to one since then. I just didn't like seeing live music in these huge crowds and tiny stages off in the distance. I still continued to regularly go to see live music but I mostly only went to clubs and theaters. Occasionally I would go to a concert in a park or downtown square with a few thousand people but that was about it. Someplace like the Tower Theater in Philly or Sheas Theater in Buffalo would hold about 3,000 people. That would be the largest venues. So no more Bruce Springsteen who would then only play hocky arenas like the Spectrum in Philly or the Aud in Buffalo.

Broken Code - Book

Broken Code: Inside Facebook and the Fight to Expose It's Harmful Secrets by Jeff Horwitz, 2023

Another quick read... about ten days. This book is a behind-the-scenes expose of the inner workings and manipulative tactics of Facebook and the resulting scandals triggered by their uncontrolled social media platform written by an award winning technology reporter for the Wall Street Journal. The book was a shocking revelation of the efforts made by Facebook leadership to overcome the results of their own employees' studies measuring the cost to users and society of flagrant and disregarded damaging effects including misinformation, political manipulation, amplifying anger, looking the other way at human trafficking, authoritarians, and drug cartels on the platform. People are supposed to believe that Facebook tries to prevent or remove harmful content but the book shows that the company is firmly set on profits first. This also includes Instagram and any product developed by Meta.

Becky's Chicken Taco Soup

It's been a very cold and snowy day... perfect for Becky making her wonderful chicken taco soup. Chicken, rice, carrots, corn, beans simmering on the stove. When ready to serve add chopped up tomatoes, extra sharp cheddar cheese and some taco chips. Put a little tabasco green pepper sauce in and dip some fresh bread. So delicious and satisfying for dinner on a Buffalo winter evening.  Plenty of leftovers too.

More Weather

Got more bad weather coming though most of it seems to be a little south of us. Today they are saying we will be getting significant lake effect from now until Thursday evening.

Doing lots of shoveling the past few days but a little at a time. We're not getting large accumulations like just south of us but it still adds up. I need to take it easy because of my recovering shoulder. I'm not going to PT this week because of the weather but this will be some exercise.

Before The Flood - Bob Dylan & The Band in Concert

I only saw Bob Dylan one time and that was in January 1974 when he played at The Spectrum in Philadelphia touring together with The Band. It's hard to believe that I saw this amazing show just over 50 years ago this month. I had seen The Band perform several times before on their own but it was very different seeing them play with and supporting Bob Dylan. There was part of the show where Dylan was alone on the stage and there was a portion of the concert with The Band playing their hits without Dylan but most of the time there were playing together. Overall it was a great mix of performances. Shortly after the concert the live album from the tour Before The Flood was released which of course I got right away.

I was only out of the Navy for about two weeks when I saw this show. I would very quickly be back to regularly seeing live music in bars, clubs, theaters and arenas throughout the rest of the 70's while attending Temple University.

Still Clubbing The Car

It's been almost seven months since our car got tic-toked in our driveway with someone trying to steal it for a probable joy ride and part of the Tic-Tok Kia Challenge.  After we got the car back from the repair shop I went out and got a locking security club for the steering wheel to deter the attempted theft from happening again. We kept it even after we got an upgraded security system from the Hyundai car dealer that included warning stickers on two car windows. Every night I went out and clubbed the car.

I've noticed over the following several months other cars around the neighborhood, Kias and Hyundais, with theft clubs on their steering wheels just like ours. Becky and I have just got into the habit of putting on and taking off the club very quickly.

A couple of weeks ago there was another rash of cars around the neighborhood with the car windows smashed and their steering wheel columns damaged. They were Kias and Hyundais too. There was one car directly across the street from us and another down the block. I had thought at sometime we would be able to stop clubbing our car but probably not. Seeing the club on the car is probably more of a deterrent to a thief than the warning stickers. One of our new neighbors across the street knocked on our door to ask me about the damaged car on the block to see if I might know who owned it. He really didn't know about the ongoing Kia thing and I told our story of what happened in our driveway and our experience getting repaired and all of the other cars that were stolen or damaged.

So now we still keep clubbing the car even when it is covered with snow.

Glass of Beer - Cone Head IPA

Watching the Bills beat the Steelers in a home playoff game drinking a very nice Cone Head IPA from Zero Gravity Brewing. The last time I had this delicious brew was at the Long View Lodge in the Adirondacks a couple of years ago.

Now I'm watching the Eagles play Tampa Bay.

Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan in Concert

Becky and I went to see Stevie Ray Vaughan at the Rooftop Skyroom on Seneca Street in July 1983. I had just bought his album Texas Flood after hearing him play on David Bowie's Let's Dance album. There had been a lot of articles about his music and playing around that time and I was anxious to see him perform live.

The show was terrific and we couldn't believe how good he and his band Double Trouble were that night.

This was the only time I ever went to a show at this venue which was very popular with the Buffalo hard rock and heavy metal scene. I looked up the Skyroom for a sense of the history and saw that it had several names over the years but about 90% of the shows there were hard rock.

I was very glad to have seen Stevie Ray Vaughan in concert especially in a small club. I was very saddened when he died i a helicopter crash in 1990.

Stevie Ray Vaughan albums in my collection.
  • Texas Flood, 1983
  • Couldn't Stand The Weather, 1984
  • Live Alive, 1986
  • In Step, 1989
  • Family Style with Jimmie Vaughan, 1990
  • Greatest Hits, 1995
  • Live at Carnegie Hall, 1997
  • The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, 2002
  • Live at The Spectrum, Montreal 1984, 2010

Winter is Here

Last night winter was coming and today it is definitely here although we certainly do not have it as bad as other parts of Buffalo and Western New York. We had a little snow activity in our neighborhood and some surrounding areas had some significant snow accumulation especially in the Southtowns.

Today was had several inches on the ground and lots of serious high winds which is the scariest part of the weather right now. We still are way behind on snow totals for the year and today is still not very much but we don't like the blowing wind. So I shoveled a few inches of snow today but it still was not enough to get the snowblower out. It stopped in the afternoon but there was a lot of snow predicted for overnight.

Becky and I have both received at least a dozen alerts on our phones since yesterday with warnings about the weather conditions and driving ban in Erie County. The messages are from the New York State Office of Emergency Management and includes both text and a vocal message after a loud beeping sound. This occurs even if your phone is silenced. Never had anything quite like this before. Not even during that really bad blizzard last year during the Christmas holidays.  It was weird that it wasn't snowing here at the time but there was a lot of heavy snow falling throughout the area.

The Bills playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers was originally scheduled for this afternoon but was rescheduled for tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 because of the weather. The Bills organization has been calling for volunteers to come down to the stadium to shovel out the seats.

We watched an episode of True Detective before going to bed and could here the wind blowing outside but at least it wasn't snowing... yet.

A Boy and His Dog - Movie

Another science fiction story set in 2024. The original book was written by Harlan Ellison in 1969 and made into a movie released in 1975 staring Don Johnson many years before becoming a star in the TV series Miami Vice. This movie would go on to be considered a cult film.

I saw it in 1975 and remember it very well. I did like the weird black comedy of the science fiction story taking place is a post-apocalyptic America but was also troubled by the misogyny of some of the very twisted plot devices. Back when I saw it the movie seemed like so far into the future of 2024. The poster said it was a future you would probably live to see and that it was an R rated rather kinky tale of survival. The telepathic dog really got to me.

Winter is Coming

Winter is coming after a relatively mild season so far. Today there have been phone and online messages from Erie County declaring a Winter Weather Emergency. The wind has started blowing and there has been some off and on snow throughout the morning and early afternoon. There still isn't any snow accumulating in our neighborhood but it's been snowing much harder in other areas.

There has been lots of talk about the Bills playoff game in Orchard Park tomorrow and there was a call for volunteers to shovel snow in the stadium. Just a little while ago an announcement was made that the game has been moved to 4:30 pm Monday afternoon because of dangerous winter conditions predicted at game time tomorrow. Also a travel ban will go into effect later this evening.

We have not been able to complain about the weather throughout this fall and winter up until now. I only shoveled snow twice so far this season and both times it was only an inch or so. I've had the snowblower ready but haven't come close to needing it. That may change over the next couple of days.

I'm glad we got out last night for some dinner and social activity. The weather forecast is showing snowy weather all this coming week starting today. It should be interesting. The only thing I worry about is losing power with all this strong wind.

Friday Night - Cafe 59 & Hallwalls

We got out of the house this evening for some dinner and an art opening. We were glad to get out because there is a lot of winter storm warnings about what will happen tomorrow and over the next few days. So we took advantage of the relatively quiet weather to go out. It rained a little off and on but not too bad.

We went down to Cafe 59 for dinner a little before 6 pm and had a wonderful meal there as usual. This place has been one of our favorite restaurants for many years now. Becky got a harvest turkey wrap with steak fries and I ordered their sheperd's pie special with a nice salad. The food was great and mine was very filling and satisfying on a cold wet night. I had a kolsch from Notch Brewing which was my first time drinking this beer. It was very good and I'll be looking for it again somewhere. Then I had a Let's Go Pils, a pilsner from Community Beer Works.  Becky had a Brooklyn NA Hoppy Amber. The service was great as usual.

Then we drove down to Hallwalls for an Amid/In WNY art opening and got a good parking spot across the street. We thought the opening might not be well attended because of the potential weather problems but we were wrong. The place was very crowded and we saw lots of friends there. It turned into a very social experience and we were talking with lots of people. We got there about 7:20 and ended up staying longer than we expected. About an hour and a half. We thought we were going to be just going in and out but we had a great time.

It was nice to get out of the house. We came home and watched a little TV before heading up to bed. It's going to be a wintry day tomorrow and over the next several days at least.

RSV Shot

Today I got my RSV vaccine shot which is recommended for all people over age 60. The shot protects against the respiratory syncytial virus which causes respiratory problems. The shot protects for two RST seasons. The immunization has been recommended by the CDC. Becky got her shot yesterday at CVS. I got mine today at Walgreens. I made an online appointment for the shot this morning and scheduled it after my PT session across the street. After I was done with PT I just walked over to Walgreens and got the shot within minutes of arriving there. No pain or discomfort either. I got the vaccine from Arexvy.

Later today still no soreness in the arm. Now I did get the shot in my right arm instead of my usual vaccine left arm shot because it was my left shoulder that was recently dislocated so I opted for the other arm. So now I feel a little better about going out and doing things like maybe going to an art opening and dinner tomorrow night.

Downward Cycle - Book

Downward Cycle by JK Franks, 2016. This is the first book in a post-apocalyptic dystopian trilogy Catalyst series set in America after several catastrophes including a crash of the power supply system and a pandemic.

I found myself reading this very quickly despite the violence and some cliche plot devices. I was a little disappointed in the end when it looked like everything was happening because of some typical conspiracy theory activities that had been ongoing for centuries. Deep state and Illuminati sort of things just waiting to happen.

I'll probably read the second book in the series as it is a direct continuation of what was happening in the first book. The other books apparently wander off into different characters and situations.

Take A Chance With Me - Late Night FV

This was a fun romp through the late 70's and early 80's pop and new wave. Stuff that was on the radio and songs I played regularly from the Pastime sound booth. The sounds of a particular time and place. The songs here were on various mixes over the years. This set is part of my Final Version series and now in my Late Night collection of mixes.

Who is Erin Carter? - TV Show

I was scanning through some Netflix shows recently and came across this thriller series about an British ex-undercover agent trying to protect herself and her family after being discovered following a robbery incident. What attracted me to the series is that it takes place in Barcelona. There were seven episodes in this UK series and I watched them in a little over a week.

The show was entertaining and had lots of plot twists. The ex-agent was living as a schoolteacher in Barcelona. During the armed robbery in a grocery store that threatens her family she exhibits highly skilled fighting skills that raises questions about her identity and past that further endangers the people around her.

The story and the pacing kept me coming back and I enjoyed the series. It ended with the possible continuation of a second season.

Birds of Fire - Mahavishnu Orchestra in Concert

In April 1973 I was home on leave for a week after having been overseas for several months and I went to a concert at the Spectrum in Philly with friends to see Mahavishnu Orchestra who were opening the show for Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention.  I had seen Zappa a few times previously over the years but I was really excited about seeing John McLaughlin and his new band.

They put on a fantastic show and played songs from their first two released albums Birds of Fire and The Inner Mounting Flame. I was very impressed with the musicians and the quality of the music. John Hammond started off the show.

The concert ended with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention. I had seen them several times before but each Zappa show is unique and this one was no different. This would be the last time I saw Zappa in concert. In 1975 I stopped going to any big arena concerts at venues like the Spectrum.
