The Overstory

The Overstory by Richard Powers, 2018.

I read this wonderful novel over a period of two weeks in August 2018 and it was one of my favorite books of the year. The book is a passionate novel about environment activism and resistance that covers an expanse of American experience with forest going back to antebellum New York up to the late 20th century timber wars in the Pacific Northwest. 

The book is structurally unusual in it's stories of people spread over time and places are working somehow, someway with the forest. The storyline was also unusual. It was sometimes difficult to read but always worth the effort.

Todd had read this book and I saw it at their house where I looked at it intently. Then I got it from the library when we got home.

Hey Jude

That summer I carried my transistor radio wherever I went. It was late August 1968 and the world had been getting ready for a new Beatles single that was being heavily promoted but nobody had heard yet.

I was walking down to Logan Park from my house a couple of blocks away. The radio DJ announced that they were about to play the new Beatles song titled Hey Jude. Get ready. I was and I hurried down the street to the park to meet friends at the top of the hill and I knew I would be the only one with a radio. The song began to play just as I entered the park and I was a little disappointed that the song would be over by the time I got to my friends. 

I walked across the lower fields, up the hill we would sled down in the winter, past the trees at the top that we used to climb as kids and over to the benches near the old mansion from 1801. I was amazed that the song was still playing and my friends got to hear it although at that point they were listening to the four minute "Na-na-na na" refrain and they probably were not very impressed. Then the DJ played the song again. 

I had no idea it would go on for a little over 7 minutes and would also be the longest charting single on the radio at the time. It was the first single on the new Apple label and would also be a massive hit. I saw the promotional video on the Smothers Brothers TV show in October. It was a big deal. Must see TV at the time. Wow, 50 years ago.

I first heard about this incident from some old salts talking about it while onboard the USS Portland and out at sea. It was one of those stories that every sailor learned about while learning how to live on the ocean.

And of course I later heard about it from Robert Shaw description of the incident in the movie Jaws.

This book was promoted as the definitive full story of the worst sea disaster in US Naval history. It is an extraordinary account of the attack and sinking of the USS Indianapolis after it delivered the atomic bomb to US forces in the Pacific and the aftermath where over 900 sailors survived the attack but went into the water where only 316 survive to be rescued including the captain who is later court martialed. The second part of the book is about the efforts of the surviving crewmembers to clear the name of their skipper and vindicate the captain.

This is an incredible book. 

USS Portland RIP

My first ship, The USS Portland (LSD-37), was commissioned in late 1970. I went aboard in January 1971 and missed being designated a “plankowner”, an original crew member, by a few weeks. The Portland left the fleet in 2003 and a brand new USS Portland (LPD-27) was commissioned in Portland this year. I recently found out my Portland was towed out to sea off Virginia, used for target practice and sunk. Broke my heart. Lots of memories. The ship’s nickname was “Sweet Pea”.

Many former US Navy ships are strategically sunk to form artificial reefs. Others are sold to other countries for use in foreign navies. The other ship I served on, the USS Plymouth Rock, was decommissioned in 1983 and later sold for scrap metal in 1995 for $268.707. The plankowner term come from the days of wooden ships but modern vessels did have some areas of wooden decks usually around the quarterdeck. A certified plankowner used to get a piece of the wooden deck when s ship went out of service.

Read this book in July 2018.

History, travel and the Middle East. A fascinating story about an amazing woman but also of her Victorian times… Gertrude Bell an orientalists, imperialists, archaeologist, explorer, spy, diplomat and obsessive letter writer. I kept seeing her name come up in books I’ve been reading and needed to learn more about her. It’s too bad Bush obviously didn’t read about her experiences otherwise he might have hesitated before invading and occupying Iraq.
