All The Devils Are Here

All The Devils Are Here by Louise Penny, 2020

Another book I read in about a week in February 2021.

This book was loaned to me by a neighbor after an online discussion of some of the books we had been reading. She and her husband had been recommending some authors to me and this book came up so she dropped it off on my porch. They also recommended the author Adrian McKinty and I recently read the first book in his detective series that takes place in Belfast.

This detective series by Louis Penny usually takes place in Montreal but this particular book was located in Paris and was actually the 18th book in the series. I wasn't sure about jumping into a new series so far along in the character development but although it was obvious there were lots of incidents in his career that were referred to throughout the novel it didn't take away from the story at all. It was very easy to follow along and I very much enjoyed the book.

This book takes place in Paris and coincidently a couple of weeks ago I just finished the first Cara Black novel Murder in the Marais which like all of her detective novels is located Paris. Although the Louise Penny novel takes place in 2020 and the Cara Black novel takes place in 1993 they both are located in the same neighborhood of Paris and share many of the same locales, streets and buildings including one particular hotel. They both also refer to the Jewish neighborhood and both plots address collaborators and resistance fighters during the WWII Nazi occupation of Paris.

I liked the Louise Penny novel and look forward to reading more of her work starting with the first novel in the series.

The Reference Desk

It's hard to believe that I worked in libraries for 25 years but I don't have a picture of me sitting at the reference desk. I enjoyed my time on the desk working at both public libraries and college libraries and I would always get a thrill when someone walked toward me with their question. I knew then that we could soon be talking about almost anything in the world. It might be a short answer after a quick lookup or the start of hours researching an illusive topic. However, usually it was "where's the bathroom?"

The library world changed a lot during my 25 years and that included the reference desk. The area around the desk was originally surrounded by reference books on multiple subjects that were eventually replaced with the computer. I was certainly responsible for much of that happening. The books just didn't disappear but gradually faded into the background as we added CD-ROM terminals but of course even they eventually went away.

Sunny Days

There have been a few sunny days recently which is pretty good for February and I have been enjoying sitting in our backyard cabana sunroom basking in the warm sun while gazing out at the snow with a good book in my hands and a cup of tea by my side. It's amazing how warm it can get in that room when the sun is shining but it also suddenly cools off when the sun goes behind a cloud.

The past few days I've been out there without any music playing on the stereo which is unusual for me but I've been enjoying the quiet that is only interrupted by the sounds of birds.

One of the things I've enjoyed doing during this pandemic year has been reading from collections of short stories or essays and the backyard retreats have been very rewarding for that effort especially since the weather got cold and my forays into the backyard have been briefer than they had been over the summer and fall.

I'm really looking forward to spring and the new growing season. I've seen a few green shoots coming up in the garden where the snow has melted. I can't wait to be a able to sit on the front porch again. Soon.

Sy Fy Tu

I first started to make a science fiction themed mix for a costume party hosted by Karen in 1980. I wrote and posted about that initial mix here. I added and expanded that mix over the years to create several CD mixes with a science fiction.

Recently as part of my pandemic mega mix project I put it all together into one long over twenty hour all day listening experience.

Everything here on this mix is from my collection. I spent some time looking for songs about space, aliens, time travel, and assorted science fiction weirdness and I really did have a lot of material. Then it was putting it together. I also always want the mix collection to sound good on shuffle play. Everything needs to work together in any order but of course I do have an initial feel for how it all goes together.

Of course there is a lot of David Bowie. I also started putting this together just after finishing reading a book about science fiction in rock music that I wrote about and posted here last December. Reading this book got me back into doing this updated mix.

Nina Simone

Morning kitchen listening with the high priestess of soul Nina Simone. It's a snowy Monday morning and perfect for spending some time with a group of her wonderful albums as I sit in the kitchen drinking tea and watching the snowfall as I work at me laptop. I could listen to her music all day.

My musical taste have evolved over the years and Nina Simone is an example of someone I knew about but had not explored her work and listened to her albums until much later in my life. I was certainly aware of her status as early as the 60's because I was reading about popular music all the time but somehow I had her categorized as a pop jazz singer. I know some of her popular songs throughout the 70's and beyond but I never got any of her albums until well into the 2010's when I discovered some of the many compilations available.

Now I have 8 of her albums including 4 multi discs compilation sets. Her music is incredible and I'm sorry I missed her unique sounds for so many years.

  • Nina Simone at Town Hall, 1957
  • High Priestess of Soul, 1967
  • Nina Simone Sings the Blues, 1967
  • The Best of Nina Simone: The Copix Years, 1993
  • The Very Best of Nina Simone: Sugar in My Bowl, 1998
  • Anthology, 2003
  • Remixed and Reimagined, 2006
  • Just Like A Woman: Nina Simone Sings Classic Hits of the 60s, 2007

The Cold Cold Ground

The Cold Cold Ground by Adrian McKinty, 2012

Quickly read this book in February 2021.

A neighbor recommend this author while having an online discussion of detective novels set in other cities around the world. I had just finished the latest Tana French detective novel set in Ireland and was starting a Cara Black detective novel set in Paris. Our neighbor also recommended a book she just finished about a detective from Quebec working on a murder case in Paris and offered to drop it off at our house when I was ready for another book. I'm reading that novel now.

The novel The Cold Cold Ground is the first of eighteen novels featuring the Belfast Ireland Catholic police detective Sean Duffy and it was amazing. It was set in the Belfast of 1981 during the Troubles, the riots and the hunger strikes as a backdrop. It was very well written and certainly gave the reader a sense of those terrible times of sectarian violence, the IRA, the Ulster Volunteer Force and British occupation.

I've read a lot over the years about the history of Ireland including the conflicts of Northern Ireland but this book took those issues to a very personal level and a brilliant depiction of Belfast at the height of the Troubles. I couldn't put the book down. The plot was complex and intelligent and moved at a quick pace. It also certainly feels like a different time and place and very dangerous too. The detective is a very good character. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.

I enjoyed the depiction of Belfast and also had Google Maps opened to that city where I was able to look and see the locations mentioned in the book although of course a lot has changed in that city since the 1980's. We were in Ireland in 2019 and had the opportunity to travel to Belfast but we declined. We spent our time in Dublin, London and Edinburgh. I really had no desire to go to Belfast where all that hate and violence has occurred in my lifetime. I don't think those feelings will ever change. Maybe it has something to do with growing up in an Irish Catholic neighborhood during the early years of the Troubles.

Mix Making History Pt. 1

This is a copy of a series of posts I made in a mix making discussion Facebook group. A Side / B Side

My mix history... pt. 1. I made a few mixtapes in the early 1970's for playing on board a Navy ship. Turntables didn't work well at sea. Later I made a few more in the mid to late 70's while living in a house with a bunch of vets I was in college with at the state university in Philadelphia. We had a lot of parties and the turntable was skipping too much because of all the dancing so I put together some mixtapes. Later throughout the 80's I made lots of mixtapes because I travelled back and forth a lot between Philly and Buffalo and didn't like the radio. I was also working as a DJ in a neighborhood artist hangout dive bar down the street from the state college and often recorded mixtapes of my sets. I also made mixes for parties and weddings. I still have all those mixtapes and also the notebooks for all the mixes. I continued making mixtapes into the mid 90's when I began using a computer and CD-R but that story is in pt. 2.

The Cactus League

The Cactus League by Emily Nemens, 2020

Read this in about a week in February 2021.

This was a fun book about baseball. Very character driven and entertaining view of an annual spring training in Arizona and the people involved such as the star player, the new rookie, the batting coach, the agent, the groupies, and others all playing games off the field. The author really knows baseball too.

The book also reads as a collection of short stories with each character developing a point of view in a group of tales about life that happen to center on baseball.

Trump is History

That Former Guy is how he is being referred to and he hates it. He likes to refer to himself now as the 45th President but that's not going to happen except in maybe his own press releases.

For most of us he will be that former guy with all the legal problems.

Or that former guy who failed in all his businesses like that New Jersey casino that just got demolished.

Texas the Failed State

Today the media has been giving a lot of attention to the snow storm in Texas that has resulted in widespread power outages that include not only loss of heat but also loss of water services throughout the state of Texas.

Republican politicians and in particular the Texas governor immediately tried to put the blame of the crises falsely on renewable energy sources despite them being only 7% of the energy grid. Also the reason there were some problems with green energy sources was because of the lack of upkeep due to the republicans taking away all the regulations necessary to ensure all the energy sources were operating at full capacity in cold weather.

Another Big Lie. Green energy is responsible for the power grid failure.

The republican led state legislatures have taken away all of the Federal regulations  that would have ensured that everything on the state power grid performed properly but of course they wanted unregulated fossil fuels for everything and the result has been this crises.

An interesting article today in Common Dreams today worth quoting in full...

From Covid To Mass Power Outages, the Texas Republican Party Has Created a Failed State

The Republican Party does not believe in government. They believe in coddling the very rich. By Juan Cole.

The Republican Party has had a lock on Texas politics for over two decades, and has reduced it to a failed state. Even Texans like Beto O'Rourke are making this observation. Millions are without electricity in the midst of one of the state’s worse winter storms ever. This massive failure of infrastructure comes on the heels of the state government’s disastrous handling of the coronavirus pandemic, in which governor Greg Abbot initially forbade mayors of major cities from ordering economic lock downs, and actively discouraged mask-wearing, policies that he then had to reverse.

The Republican Party does not believe in government. Perhaps that is one reason its leader recently tried to kill the government on Capitol Hill. The GOP is about coddling the very rich. The poor babies don’t like being regulated, being made to spend money on the welfare of the people, or being taxed. Who will will take these burdens off the snowflake business classes? Never fear, the GOP is here.

The Republican Party is the victim of magical thinking that the market can solve all problems if only it is unleashed and freed of the shackles of government.

These precepts are ugly, producing an ever ratcheting economic inequality in which much of the country’s wealth is in the talons of a handful of billionaires while millions live in poverty and food insecurity and even many workers are part of the growing class of working poor. Class and race overlap– keeping the billionaires happy at the expense of the rest of us mostly means keeping elderly privileged whites happy. Look at the Forbes 500 some time.

These precepts are also grounded in falsehoods. No, most poor people aren’t poor because they are lazy. No, most millionaires aren’t self-made. And most of all, there are lots of problems that the market does not solve very well, where it would be good to have the government take the situation in hand.

One reason the initial vaccine rollout last December and early January by the Trump administration was such a bust was that Trump would not deploy the resources of the federal government. His officials just shipped the vaccine off to state and local institutions that had no capacity, not even enough trained people, to deliver the doses into arms. President Biden, in contrast, is mobilizing the military and national guard to give the shots. Someone is finally in charge, and willing to deploy government rather than degrading and belittling it.

The electric grid is a piece of key infrastructure that should be nationalized. You will say, gasp, socialism. Meh. Social security is socialism. State universities are socialism, and would be better and less corrupt and would serve the public better if only they were more socialistic. The post office is socialism, and is currently being destroyed by postmaster general Louis DeJoy so as to replace it with more expensive and less efficient private delivery companies.

Would it not be better to have a larger public sector and electricity during ice storms than capitalism and 4 million people without power?

The state’s privately owned power plants have not been weatherized to deal with severe winter storms. The equipment at the electricity plants itself froze and stopped working.

Because the private companies that own the plants did not want to spend the money to weatherize them. Indeed, the deregulation of the electricity grid may have encouraged companies not to weatherize. This, even though severe winter storms hit the Southwest roughly once every 8-10 years. They are not rare.

Officials of the Texas Republican Party were aware of this problem and did nothing. The companies were aware and did nothing. The market does not like investing money to forestall a disaster that may be 8 years away. The market is not nice.

Rather than blame blind worship of the market for the problem, the Republican right actually trotted out the old lie that wind turbines failed in bad weather.

Even Bloomberg, which is itself owned by a billionaire, admitted forthrightly that coal, natural gas and nuclear plants failed at a far greater rate than did wind farms, and that the latter are a tiny part of the problem. (Some did freeze up.)

No surprise here. This is the party that does not believe in science, does not believe in the human-caused climate emergency, and many members of which believe that Hillary Clinton eats children at a Washington, D.C., pizzeria. Trump even peddled the lies that wind turbines cause cancer and the climate emergency is a Chinese hoax and 70 million marks voted for him anyway. Apparently Republicans are so gullible that they will believe almost anything, as long as believing it helps the greediest and least reputable section of our plutocracy.

A Bunch of Idiots

“If that was a planned armed insurrection, man, you had really a bunch of idiots.”
Republican Senator Ron Johnson.

And only an idiot would have looked at the events of January 6th and say something like that because he is indeed like the other trump supporters attacking the capitol building and idiot. He just happens to be a US Senator too.

Yes, we've always known that trump supporters were a bunch of idiots and they were following instructions from the biggest idiot of them all in the white house at the time and they were also supported by a bunch of idiots in congress trying to suck up to the orange grifter. Idiots all.

So this morning one of the first things I read was this stupid Ron Johnson quote as he dismissed the events of January 6th.  While talking to reporters recently he played down the attack on the capitol and criticized people for calling the group at the capitol "armed" because they were not carrying obvious firearms. He apparently did not consider being battered by clubs, metal poles, wrenches, baseball bats and soaked in bear spray to be weapons. He accused the Democrats of playing up the violence and that most trump supporters who came to Washington on that day were peaceful. Bullshit.

However, in court filings, officials have said that guns, bombs, stun guns and other weapons were seized from rioters, the Associated Press reported. Fourteen people face charges related to bringing weapons to the riots, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, including an Alabama man who allegedly had an arsenal in his truck and a Maryland man who police say stormed the Capitol with a gun, multiple magazines and a bulletproof vest. Federal prosecutors have also accused extremist groups of coordinating the deadly attack.

He is just another example of the cowardly morally bankrupt republican party and the definition of a moron.

Hotel Henry Closing

"The pandemic body blow to our community was overwhelming for Henry,"

We saw today that Hotel Henry is closing because of the loss of business due to the pandemic. I read about this in the Buffalo News and a couple of the local TV station websites and nobody is saying anything about the 100 Acres Restaurant in the building. I truly hope that restaurant will somehow survive.

There has been a lot of discussion of Hotel Henry in the local media today and later in the day I saw that the Hilton chain will be reopening the complex in April. There is already information about the hotel on their website although they are not taking reservations yet. Perhaps in the long run it will be better for the Richardson Complex that a hotel chain is involved.

We have gone to that restaurant many times in the past few years that the hotel and restaurant that opened in 2017.  The food has always been wonderful and we always had a wonderful experience there. The bar has always been very nice too. I think we have probably had dinner there at least six times in the two years it was open before the pandemic.

The Hotel also was a great place to see artwork that was displayed throughout the second floor of the building. So sad.

Because of the historic nature of the building and all the money that has gone into the renovation I'm sure the hotel will reopen at some time in some way. There are also plans for the other adjacent buildings that were all part of the original psych center. It really is an amazing building and site.

Our Vaccine Shots

Today Becky and I received our first covid-19 vaccine shots. We made the appointment online four weeks ago through New York State and our vaccination site was on the UB South Campus which of course we are both very familiar with. The shots were given at Harriman Hall and there was a special parking lot for the vaccination site.

We were very pleased about how smooth and efficient the entire process was today. There was adequate signage and instructions began as we entered the designated parking lot. We were told to go the the building where the shots were given about five minutes before our appointment time.

There was a state trooper at the door who checked our names on a clipboard for the appointment time. We needed our paperwork including our medical cards and photo ID. We were checked again inside and shown to a table where a person went over our paperwork in more detail. From there we went down a hallway and stood in a very short line that took just a few minutes for us to get to the front. The line ended in a room full of tables where nurses were giving shots. There were actually two lines with one for the first shots and another for second shots which was much shorter.

After a few minutes we went to separate tables for our shots which only took another few minutes after checking the paperwork again. We got our shots and also vaccine cards with our appointment scheduled for the second shots. Ours would be in three weeks on March 8th at the same time.

We then went to another room that was designated for a 15 minute recovery period sitting in socially distant chairs. We also noticed that whenever a person left the chairs someone came over and sprayed the chairs. That also occurred everywhere we interacted with staff. Each table we were at was wiped down and even the pens we used to sign paperwork. All of the staff people were very friendly and caring. The entire experience was positive and satisfying.

After our 15 minute waiting period we left and went back to the car and drove home. The entire process from the time we walked out of our house and until we went back in was just a little over an hour.

Now we're looking forward to completing the process in three weeks.

Cara Black in Paris

I just finished another Cara Black crime detective novel. They've all taken place in Paris and feature Aimee Luduc Investigations. There are at least 19 books in the series and I had read a couple of them but they were relatively recently published.

The one I finished reading today was the very first book in the series Murder in the Marais published in 1999 and the story takes place in 1993. In May 2018 I read Murder in Saint-Germain #17 published in 2017 and Murder on the Left Bank #18 published in 2018 which I read in October 2018.

One of the things I really liked about these novels were the detailed descriptions of Paris including the restaurants, cafes, shops, museums, streets and cultural buildings. It is all very fascinating and fresh in my mind having visited Paris for the first time in 2018. There are many scenes in the book that carefully describe the settings and Paris was so fresh in my mind that I could picture those scenes to the finest details although the Paris of these novels all take place in the late 90's and early 00's and have that computer era feel to them.

Jumping into the 17th novel of a series does have it's problems but I really did enjoy both of those books.

So now I was able to get the first book in the series out of the library and I learned more about the detective Aimee Luduc by starting at the beginning. I was somewhat disappointed in the book and I realized she had become a better writer as she progressed through the series over twenty years. The plot of this first book doesn't always make sense but I could see the beginnings of some of her ways of doing things and getting into trouble that would be fine tuned later on in the series. It was still enjoyable because I knew the character and the author was focusing on Paris the city right from the very start of these novels.

I see that a new book #19 in the series has been recently published and the library has it available as an e-book so I think I will be getting it sometime in the very near future. Unfortunately the library now has volumes 1, 17, 18 and now 19 but none of the other novels. Oh well. There are lots of other detective mystery novels set in interesting locations out there.

Blues All Night Long

I went through period recently where I was listening to a lot of the blues. I do have a lot of blues music in my collection and I go through phases where I will play a lot of albums. I've also made a few CD mixes of blues music over the years which still sound great.

Last April I wrote and posted about listening to the blues here. Over the next several months I was collecting some songs together in a under constructed playlist that I eventually made one of my pandemic mega mixes.
