2 AM Hit & Run

A little after 2 am last night Katie and Todd's Subaru got totaled on the street in front of their house by a hit and run driver. The damaged car that hit their car was found later on Germantown Avenue across the street from the Acme market.

I woke up around 2:15 and went down to the bathroom. I wasn't sure what it was but I did hear something. Katie met me on the stairs and told me what happened. Todd was outside with some neighbors looking at the car. Another car on the street was also hit. K&T's car was pushed two houses down the street and their was debris everywhere. One of the neighbors called the police but it took an hour for them to respond.

They bought a new car several months ago and they only picked it up from the dealership earlier in the week. The new car and our car were in the driveway. The old car, which they planned to sell, parked on the street out in front of the house. Well, hopefully they can get the full market value of the car from the insurance company. There is a lot of hassle initially to get things rolling but maybe this process will be better and quicker than trying to sell the car which was a 2011 Subaru Forester with somewhat low mileage. They didn't think the car dealership was offering them what they thought the car was worth which is why it was on the street and not traded in when they got their new 2022 Chrysler minivan hybrid.

Todd began the long insurance company process today which included a trip to the police station to get the information about the car and driver who did the damage but the paperwork hadn't been completed yet. They could go ahead and just submit a claim with their insurance company, take the $500 deductible and let them tow the car and evaluate the damage instead of having the other company for the offender do it. We'll see how it goes. This was also the supposed to be the day the baby was going to be born.

Update 1/15

There was also a big mess in the street with debris all over the place. Todd went out to get rid of most of it. Filled two trash bags. He spent a lot of time talking with insurance reps and another trip to the police station.

A couple of guys and a woman neighbor stopped by the house to say they found the car that hit the car in front of the house. Katie talked to them and they didn't know whose car it was and were surprised when she told them it was hers. They apparently saw the wrecked car up at the Acme and remembered the other damaged car in their neighborhood and they investigated. They even took some debris and matched it. They were being detectives!. Kate told them the police had already identified the hit and run car but appreciated their efforts. They all had a laugh on the porch.
