Yesterday Aaron Judge broke the American League home run record with his 62nd homer. A lot of American League fanboys were making a really big deal about on social media like 62 home runs was some great record. OK, it was a good season for him and it did break the American League record but that record has been broken in the majors several times over the years. Of course it's a big deal for the Yankees.
I remember when Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's home run record on the last day of the 1961 season. I was a brand new baseball fan that year and learning about the game. I went to some games with Uncle Tom and my brother Tom down to Connie Mack Stadium. I very vividly recall the controversy around the breaking of Babe Ruth's record. Many people strongly complained at the time that Roger Maris didn't really break that record of 60 home runs in a season because Maris needed more games to get to 61 homers. Back in the day this was the beginning of my brother Tom's obsession with baseball statistics.
Some people have said that the National Leagues players who went on to break Roger Maris' record shouldn't really count because of the use of performance enhancement drugs which may or may not have affected the outcome of games and the ability to hit home runs.
Overall Aaron Judge is 7th on the list of home runs hit in a season behind Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.
