The Tour de France opened today and we had it on TV right away on this Saturday morning. We were thrilled that the Tour was back to it's normal time of year after the long wait until the fall last year because of Covid. We were surprised this morning to find the Tour de France on our favorites list. Sling TV knows our habits.
However, we were shocked by the crash that occurred about a half hour after we started watching the race. It was terrible to watch. Especially live. The crash was obviously caused by a spectator who held up a handmade sign in front of the TV cameras as the racers approached and the sign knocked a rider right off his bike that then started a cascade of falling riders. It was awful to see so many riders crash. Some were obviously injured and the race was substantially disrupted.
Later we would hear that the police were looking to arrest the spectator with the sign and the official tour organization was planning a lawsuit. The word was they would try to make an example of this incident so that people would not carry signs that could potentially interfere with the race in the future.
