I read The Queen's Gambit, a novel by Walter Tevis from 1983, in about a week. I knew the story from recently watching the Netflix TV series which for the most part followed the book very closely.
It was fast paced, well written, unique and very engaging. It was an interesting story of drug and alcohol addiction. You also didn't need to know much about chess to enjoy this book. It captured the excitement of chess.
