Random Album Effect - Polaroids

A random album selection started today with Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection released by Shawn Colvin in 2004. I've always loved the music of Shawn Colvin and have used her songs on many mixes I've made over the years. This collection contains many of her most popular songs.

Following Colvin was the reggae sounds of Jamaican singer John Holt. Police in a Helicopter was one of his last albums. Most of his many records were released in the seventies. This is a very pleasant collection of reggae songs. Nice background music.

Next up in this sequence was the first solo album, Policy released in 2015, from the Arcade Fire multi-instrumentalists Will Butler, the younger brother of the band's front man Win Butler. Most of the album evoked Arcade Fire not unexpectedly and it did sound good. There were a few songs that could have been on an AF album. Overall it was a nice listen.

Then came the Mexican Institute of Sound's Politico released in 2012 which was very wild Latin party music except the songs are apparently about all the death and violence in Mexico. Despite the content of the songs sung in Spanish this is a fun sounding album. Sort of Latin punk/funk rock with marimbas. Very strange but the album has an incredible sound.

The last album in the group was a very bleak sonic landscape by the group Tracker. Polk is their second album and was released in 2002.  Most of the songs had a country rock lo-fi feel. It's a good album but not something I would listen to a lot. I haven't used them in any mix but I should.

The albums in this Random Album Effect:

  • Shawn Colvin - Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection, 2004
  • John Holt - Police in a Helicopter, 1983
  • Will Butler - Policy, 2015
  • Mexican Institute of Sound - Politico, 2012
  • Tracker - Polk, 2002
