That is an expression for doing something that Mom-Mom would do and mostly referred to her looking out the front window and observing the neighbors. I do a lot of mom-momming since I've retired.
Our grandmother spent a lot of time in her home on Evergreen Avenue in Chestnut Hill sitting on the front porch or in a chair next to the front window watching the comings and goings of her neighbors and other folks walking past here house.
There were a lot of people walking around her street because she was only a couple of blocks from the shopping area of Chestnut Hill on Germantown Avenue where there were plenty of stores and restaurants. People parked along her street because it was also very close to the train station for the quick ride downtown. There was also a city bus route on her street and some folks would be waiting for the bus on the corner.
So in recent years I've been doing some mom-momming too. We live in a somewhat busy street with people walking around because of our close proximity to Delaware Park with sports fields, a golf course, jogging, etc, the Buffalo Zoo, a nearby school, a subway station, two colleges withing walking distance and the tourist attraction Frank Lloyd Wright house around the corner.
I like to sit on our front porch reading a book and/or listening to music. During the winter or in bad weather I sit in a comfy chair next to the front window on the second floor which gives me a nice view overlooking the street. I see lots of people walking up and down our street. People are walking their dogs, doing power walks and jogging. We have a lot of doubles across the street and there are many young people living in those apartments coming and going all the time. We also have a fair amount of student in the neighborhood but because of the high cost of apartments in the area most of these are grad students. There is one house across the street that has had a steady stream of medical students as tenants.
So sitting on the porch or on the perch, which is what I call that second floor window chair, I notice a lot of what is going on in the neighborhood and who lives where. It's all part of mom-momming.
