Athens 50 Years Ago

It was 50 years ago today I was sitting at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens while a shipmate snapped this photo. We arrived in Athens, well actually the port of Pireas, on March 29th 1972 and stayed there for some well needed R&R until April 6th. I saw a lot of Athens and had a great time before heading off to more NATO exercises and a trip to Naples.

The Acropolis was very impressive but I was surprised to see all of the graffiti on the stone walls and especially the really old ones from foreign soldiers.

Athens itself was my first major European city to visit for any length of time. I had been to Cadiz in Spain but that was only for one day. We were in Athens for a week that first time. I would end up spending a lot of time in Greece in various places like Thessaloniki and the island of Crete.

I thought Athens was very uptight at the time. I know the people there were living under a dictatorship at the time. Sort of like Spain under Franco when we were just there too. We did have some fun in bars there but they catered to American servicemen and seemed like they were different from the regular tavernas and cafes filled with Greek people. It's like they wanted to keep us separated.

We also went on little bus tours of the countryside and to various historical sites scattered around the area of southern Greece. One memorable trip was to the ancient city of Corinth that had some amazing ruins. There was also a spectacular canal through the isthmus of Corinth with ships going through it as we watched from a bridge overhead. Traveling around Greece was a lot of fun and the ancient history was fascinating and everywhere.

We also went to some very nice restaurants and had some fabulous meals with lots of local Greek wine especially when we were out in the countryside on a sightseeing trip. One time we ordered some food from a menu that was not in English and just got whatever. It turned out to be a lamb's head on a plate in the center of the table. We ate the meat from the cheeks. Lots of fond memories of Greece.

There was a tradition of Greek men throwing wine glasses into the fireplace after dancing around the room. Of course when a couple of guys in our group also threw their empty wine glasses into the fireplace we were all asked to leave. Apparently only special people with special glasses were allowed to do that ritual.

And then there was the ouzo but that's another story.

New Stadium?

Recently New York State announced a funding bill that incudes $1.4 billion dollars for a new Bills stadium in Orchard Park, NY.  That includes $600 million from NYS and $250 million from Erie County. That is $850 million from taxpayers. That would be the largest public subsidy for an NFL stadium ever. No football team in the history of the NFL has ever needed that much money to stay in a city. The Pegula's who own the Bills are reportedly asking the state for over a billion dollars in taxpayer funding. This looks like a scam.

If this was a multiuse facility located in downtown Buffalo where large numbers of people would have ongoing access then perhaps public taxpayer money would be put to good use but not for a stand-alone football only stadium out in the far suburbs that would only be used 8 to 10 times per year. OK, maybe once in a while there might be a large concert held there. This new proposed stadium also does not have a roof.

The last time this stadium was renovated with taxpayer money the Bills actually decreased the fan capacity of the facility. Sure, they put in some fancy expensive suites for the big wigs but they made the stadium smaller. It is also far away from any public transportation so it must have very large parking lots surrounding it. It would also be interesting to see the number of people who actually attend games in that stadium and see what percentage of the taxpaying population they consist of in New York State.

My feeling is that if this is a taxpayer funded stadium then it should be located in an area that will get the maximum amount of use and that would be in downtown Buffalo or nearby. It should be a multi-use facility that would include a convention center, a concert venue that would accommodate various size crowds and a multiple sports venue. There would also be a hotel and retail space. The South Park area just below downtown would be a good place for the stadium.

There has been some argument from Bills fans that a new stadium needs to have expanded parking lots to enable people to tailgate before the games. These people want to get there many hours before the game to cook their own food, get drunk and party. Tailgating is most likely the most significant reason for the excessive rowdiness and obnoxious rudeness one encounters as Bills games.

I think there should be minimal parking near a downtown stadium with plenty of public transportation to bring people to the facility from all over the city and parking lots situated along the rail lines. There would be plenty of restaurants and bars available nearby for those who want to eat and get drunk before the game. Oh, wait, bars are not always open on Sunday mornings. I guess that is really the main point for those people. Drinking on Sunday morning is a Bills fan priority.

Well, if that is the case and the main reason for having the stadium in the center of a parking lot wilderness than it should be done with zero public funding or at least the very minimum and certainly not more than the sales tax revenue generated by the NFL in Buffalo.

A stadium in the city would boost the economy of the entire region,

Afternoon Delight

This afternoon I spent a delightful nearly two hours sitting in our backyard sunroom. It was cold and sunny with a little snow still on the ground in shadowed places and the squirrels were everywhere thinking it should be spring now. I was thinking that too as I watched the robins in the backyard digging around in the frozen ground for worms.

There was lots of activity in the birdfeeders that also had my attention while I tried to read the last few chapters of Jules Verne's Around The World In Eighty Days. I had the stereo going too and was listening to some 80's new wave and punk but it couldn't keep me from dozing off a little bit. That sun was just so warm.

There are a lot of flowers on the verge of opening up including some daffodils that would have if they had felt the sun today the way I did. I recently put a thermometer in the room and some sunny days it has been up to the high 70's in there but today was a very nice 68.

Honey Spelt Bread

Becky's baked bread this week was another delicious rustic loaf that was created through a process of using a soaker, a sponge and the dough.

It called for using spelt which is an ancient grain that has been cultivated for many thousands of years and has recently had a resurgence in popularity and use.

This bread was very good and she did a fine job baking it. We had it with a homemade soup for dinner.

Looking forward to having it for breakfast tomorrow too.

The Oscar Slap

We had no motivation to watch the Oscars this year as usual but this morning the only thing we really heard about the show last night was Will Smith assaulting comedian and host Chris Rock for telling a joke he didn't like. He took issue with the joke about his wife and walked up to the stage and slapped the host across the face. The Slap that was heard around the world.

The weird thing too is that an hour later he was on the stage accepting an Oscar win. How the hell does that happen? At the very least he should have been escorted out of the theater by security or police for the violent act he committed on live television that was broadcast around the world. There is also video of him later dancing and partying while holding his Oscar. I guess movie stars think they can get away with anything. This is the guy who complained about his violent father. He has also tried to portray himself as some kind of defender of black women and there are people who are justifying his violence on that issue. Well, there are ways to do that besides walking up to someone and slapping them in the face.

According to the news and police statements, Chris Rock has declined to file assault charges against Smith. Really? What about the award show producers? Can any member of the audience now go up on stage and assault a member of the show?

Take it a step further. What Smith has been allowed to do could really be done by anyone who doesn't like a joke or feels offended by a comedian on stage. Just go up there and punch him or her out. An assault for an insult is now OK. Especially on live TV in front of millions of people. Or maybe this is just OK for the Hollywood elite.

The Academy should take back that Oscar. They should not reward his boorish and violent behavior. There are a lot of people defending Smith's actions but they are wrong...IMHO. It is also a symptom of mental illness when you can't control your impulses. Will Smith clearly has emotional problems. Well, taking back the Oscar that they gave him is harsh and just maybe they should expel him from the Academy. Let him keep his little statuette but purge him from the books. Ban him from future Academy events and activities. Finally draw a line. BTW, purge Weinstein while they are at it.

Last night as usual we didn't watch the Oscars show. Sometimes in the recent past we might have turned it on for a little peek at the later in the night but we haven't sat there all night and watched the whole show in many years. Part of the problem in recent years is where to watch since we cut the cable cord about five years ago. We could jump through some hoops and maybe watch the network on our antennae but we haven't tried since we got the new smart TV a few months ago.

Last year's Oscars was the least watched Academy Awards Show in the history of television.

Update: Will Smith issued an apology on Instagram where he called his behavior "unacceptable and inexcusable". He went on to say "I was out of line and I was wrong" and also that "violence in all forms is poisonous and destructive". He also included in his note an apology to "the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world."

Very Cold @ 17 Degrees

And the wind chill of six degrees. That is what the weather app was saying at 10 pm last night. Becky was exclaiming her worry about the health of her flowers in the garden. Lots of windy blowing snow too.

Woke up this morning with about two inches of fresh snow on the ground. We really are done with this recent old school Buffalo winter. It sure doesn't feel like spring right now.

This morning we have to drive out to the accountants to sign our tax forms which means I need to clean off the car one more time and do some snow shoveling. It's cold today but the sun is out. If we didn't need to go somewhere this morning the sun would eventually melt off the snow on the sidewalk like it did yesterday. Fortunately we were able to wait until after morning rush hour but there was still some snow on the ground while driving out there to Main and Harlem. We signed the paperwork and went home, well I did but dropped me off and then headed over to her studio.

Reggae All Day - Part 5

Reggae All Day Pt. 5. During the mid-1970's I was exploring more reggae and expanding my collection of reggae albums. I was especially focused on getting every Bob Marley albums and also the world of dub. In early May 1976 Becky and I were in Buffalo NY visiting her family. It was my first time in Buffalo and eating chicken wings. While there a friend offered to take us out to see some live music. He was being vague and we had no idea who we were seeing as we headed downtown. We were surprised that he had tickets for us to see Bob Marley & The Wailers at the Century Theater, an old movie house. The opening act oddly was George Thorogood & The Destroyers. Cinderella Team

During every NCAA Tournament that is usually a bracket breaking Cinderella team for an early round. This year the 15th seed Saint Peter's College made it to the Elite Eight before finally losing to number 8 North Carolina. It was a great run and very entertaining to watch.

One year Sean and I watched a very low seed VCU upset a number one seed Duke. That was fun to watch and the crowd in Buffalo certainly went for the underdog. It was amusing to see all of the upset Duke fans crying in the stands. That year VCU wasn't a Cinderella team beyond that one game. Not like Saint Peter's was this year.

Saint Peter's was a number 15 seed and they first upset number 2 seed Kentucky in the first round. That one game busted a lot of people's brackets as many folks had Kentucky going to the Final Four. In the second round they beat number 7 seed Murray State. That was an exciting game as neither team had ever gone beyond the second round into the Sweet Sixteen and both teams would have gone on to be an underdog. Saint Peter's won that game by ten points but it was a highly entertaining game that was very close throughout the night.

They moved on into the Sweet Sixteen and played Purdue. We had seen Purdue a couple of times throughout the Tournament and thought Saint Peter's would be lucky to just have made it into this round but they played their hearts out again and won. It was another very exciting and close game that went down to the very last seconds. It was almost shocking the way they beat Purdue and moved into the Elite Eight where they were the first number 15 seed to ever advance that far into the tournament.

The other teams making it into the Final Four were set by the time of the North Carolina and Saint Peter's game on Sunday night. It would be the winner of this game along with Villanova, Kansas and Duke which were all number 2 or 1 seeds.

North Carolina did their homework and were prepared for Saint Peter's. They dominated them in every aspect of the game and led by twenty points all afternoon. The Peacocks never had a chance and were not getting past number 8 seed North Carolina. Saint Peter's had their run and now it was over.

There was an interesting statistic which illustrated that the four teams with the most tournament wins in the history of the tournament were all in the 2022 Final Four. North Carolina, Kansas, Duke and Villanova were the winningest college teams of all time and there they were together. This was not a particular unusual Final Four bracket.

Another note of personal interest is that the fifth team in that all time list of winning teams was Temple University. They didn't usually get very far in the tournaments but they did seem to get in almost every year and usually one some games every year which added up enough to get them the number five spot in the all time wining list.

Galaxy Hazy IPA

Galaxy Hazy is a single hopped IPA from Firestone Walker, California. It's made with Australian hops and is part of their Propagator Series of beers. It was made to be very citrusy and made with intense tropical flavors including guava, passionfruit and peach. I found it to be delicious.

It was part of the Firestone Walker 12 pack of IPAs.

I got Frankenstein in the photo and I'm ready to start reading that classic again. Something I last read about 50 years ago.

Clarence Thomas - Political Hack

Over the past several days there have been numerous stories in the news that include documentation exposing what has been known for decades that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife Ginni Thomas have been conservative right wing political activists and hacks that have politized the court.

Much of the documentation released this week illustrates the constant and intense activities of Ginni Thomas to overthrow the 2020 election and there have been court cases going to the Supreme Court where Clarence Thomas has been the lone judge to try and end the investigations into the right wing attempt to storm the Capitol on the behest of Donald Trump and conservative members of Congress. Ginni Thomas has been shown to be one of the instigators of the insurrection and a speaker at the rally before the attack on the government.

There have been numerous calls for Thomas to recluse himself from any court case concerning the insurrection or the 2020 election. That should certainly be the absolute minimum. They both be forced to testify under oath before the Jan. 6th Committee on the Insurrection and then Clarence Thompson should resign from the Supreme Court. If he refuses then he should be impeached.

Andrew's Bath Time

Recently we have been enjoying Andrew's bathtime several days a week. Sean and Ashley have been sharing that experience with us using video chat and it has been so much fun. He is such a happy little boy. We have become part of his bath routine two or three times a week and it has been a joy.

It is like watching him grow up and he keeps  changing. Sometimes he tries to stand up and climb around on the sides of the tub. He has many toys in the tub with him but often he wants to play with the faucet. We love watching him explore everything and he has become so vocal too.

He has a very busy day with daycare and then playing with mommy and daddy when they all get home. He gets really tired out by the end of the day. We would often watch him get dried off and into his pajamas which he sometimes fusses with but then there is the routine with turning the overhead light on and off by pulling the string. He loves that and gets very happy when we cheer him on.

Then it is time for a bottle and to cuddle in the chair with mommy before going to bed. They are fortunate that he is a good sleeper. We are looking forward to seeing him for his upcoming first birthday.

The Racist Sexist Senate Hearings

Watching the senate confirmation hearings this week on the Supreme Court nomination of Kentaji Brown Jackson has been a sickly cringe inducing spectacle of conservative racists and sexist dog whistles. It sometimes feels like 1962 rather than 2022. The republican senators were disgusting.

The first black woman nominated to the Supreme Court was constantly attacked on misleading and ignorant rants by conservatives frightened by their own culture wars with America. She is their worst nightmare... a smart black woman with a sense of justice.

Reggae All Day - Part 4

Reggae All Day Pt. 4. One of the highlights of 1973 for me besides getting discharged from the military and moving back to Philadelphia was seeing the reggae movie The Harder They Come. It was playing at a theater in my old neighborhood when I was home on leave and I gathered some friends together to see it. They really didn’t know anything about reggae music or Jamaican culture and it was a real eye-opener for them. I loved the movie and bought the Jimmy Cliff soundtrack album shortly after that weekend. There was a lot of wonderful music in that movie. A couple of other great reggae movies of that time were Rockers (1978) and Babylon (1980).

Now back to the reggae mix... lots more good covers too.

DMZ - The Series

I just watched the TV series DMZ on HBO Max. It was a short series of four one hour episodes. It was a dystopian alternative history that takes place about eight years after the Second American Civil War has divided the country and Manhattan had become a demilitarized zone and essentially a no man's land ruled by competing neighborhood warlords. Into this comes a doctor who has been searching for her son for eight years after she herself escaped Manhattan but lost her son in the process.

Apparently this story is based on a DC comic of the same name which I hadn't heard of before. It takes place in the near present or recent past in a Manhattan that has been abandoned by both sides of the Civil War. The story was entertaining about the displaced and forgotten people in their different enclaves that compete for food, water and resources controlled by various factions. The show is very effective in using minorities and people of color as the primary characters throughout the storyline. It is literally a jungle out there.

A lot of the story is somewhat cliched and predictable in their view of minorities and the culture left without law enforcement but the action and the basic drive for freedom and hope overcomes the show's faults. It has a satisfying ending but there is plenty of plot options to continue the series in a second season and beyond.

Crafted Thru Hops

We stopped in Wegman's this week and I picked up this 12 pack of IPAs from Firestone Walker, one of my favorite breweries and which also includes one of my all time favorite beers... Union Jack IPA.

The package was called Crafted Thru Hops and contained an IPA mixed pack that included Union Jack IPA, Mind Haze Double IPA, Galaxy Hazy IPA and Fly Jack IPA.

I went into Wegman's expecting to get a self selected six pack of various beers on their special singles shelf but I was rather disappointed in their selection, There really wasn't anything there that I was interested in or had not had before. So I looked around and found this 12 pack. I also got a four pack of Fuller's London Pride and a six pack of Erdinger NA, a German weissbrau in a surprising heavy old school bottle.

Reggae All Day - Part 3

Reggae All Day Pt.3. I spent nearly three of my four Navy years in the Caribbean and loved all of the music I found there in countries and islands like Panama, Jamaica, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Trinidad, Martinque, Columbia, Aruba, St Maarten, Virgin Islands, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Costa Rica St. Kitts, Dominica and a few more. I saw live music everywhere I went including salsa, calypso, ska, soca, cumbia, merengue, zouk and lots more but to me at that time it all seemed like some kind of reggae. It was all an eye and ear opener for this kid from Philly. The food too. Now more reggae...

Mart Casey

Martin Casey. 5/9/1901 - 5/30/1973. He was a grandfather to us and although he was not a blood relative he was family. He married our grandmother Mom-Mom  in the early 1950's although I'm not sure of the exact date yet. There are pictures from the wedding in the family and Betsy was the flower girl. She was about 5 and remembers the wedding so it was probably 1954. I was then 3. They then lived together at the apartment on Wissahickon Avenue which I do remember. He worked at Leeds & Northrup which was originally located on East Logan street in the neighborhood but later moved out to the Fort Washington area. I remember driving by it all the time going between Germantown and Harleysville.

He didn't want to be called Grandpa or Poppa or any kind of grandfatherly terms of endearment. He just wanted us to call him Mart. So they were always referred to as Mom-Mom and Mart. However, he was a grandfather to us and he and Mom-Mom were always there when we were growing up.

A few years later they moved into the Morris home on East Evergreen Avenue in Chestnut Hill. That was the family home where her first husband's father grew up in. Our great-grandfather Thomas Morris's sister Catherine Morris lived there until she passed away in 1955. Mom-Mom eventually inherited the house and she and Mart moved in. One thing I remember very well in that house at that time was the round ottoman in the living room that opened up and was filled with toys. We had special toys that were only available to us at Mom-Mom's house. We spent a lot of time in that house over the years.

I've been doing some research on Mart on the Ancestry site where I got his birth date. I also discovered that he grew up on Seymour Street several houses down the street from the Keegan house where Mom-Mom lived. It turns out he was best friends with my great-uncle Thomas Keegan who was born in 1902. Mom-Mom and Mart knew each other as kids and through their teenage years.

Mart Casey married Helen McGettigan in early 1929 according to some records I found. She tragically died on November 3, 1929 in childbirth. She dies giving birth to twin girls who also tragically died that day. I can't imagine how devastated Mart and the family must have been.

Mom-Mom had married Thomas Morris in 1927, had a child in 1928, and then her husband, my grandfather, died in 1931. Mom-Mom and Mart as young people shared the tragedy of losing their spouses at an early age.

Mart moved into the home of his sister Margaret and her family, the Metzgers, after the death of his wife. John and Margaret Metzger lived on Clapier Street with their family and Mart joined their household. As far as I can tell he stayed with the Metzger family at least into the 1940's.

Mom-Mom and Mart were close friends their entire lives and Mart wanted to marry Elizabeth Keegan Morris for many years after the death of their spouses. She kept putting him off and waiting for her daughter to graduate from high school, then get married, then after having a child, and another child. Apparently in the early 1950's Mart said now or never. They got married.

I have great memories of Mart as we were growing up. He used to tell us stories of Indians buried in the backyard in Chestnut Hill. He would often take me and Tom to the Wissahickon Park and also to get spring water from a fountain near Cresheim Valley Drive. We loved going there and thought it was an adventure. I previously wrote about Mart's escapade at the Knife and Fork Inn

In the early 1960's Mart drove a Chrysler Plymouth with one of those push button transmissions. I thought it was way cool to watch him push that button to go in reverse or drive or park. Those transmissions didn't last very long on American cars.

We went on vacation with Mom-Mom and Mart every year. Most of the time it was sharing a house down the shore and sometimes we would go up to the Poconos together.

Mart got lung cancer from smoking. He always smoked... a lot. I was overseas in the Navy when he got really sick. I was home a few times during that period and would go and see him. He was not well and didn't look good. He finally had surgery that removed one of his damaged lungs. He never recovered from that procedure. The last time I saw him was after the operation and he laid in bed and opened his shirt to show me the incision. He could barely breathe but he wanted to impress on me the dangers of smoking. I had quit myself a year earlier but would go back and forth over the next few years. Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I ever did but Mart tried his best to make it easier for me by using him as an example. He died a few months later in May of 1973. He was 72 years old.

I was able to attend his funeral. It was a very sad affair. Mart was well known in the Germantown neighborhood where we both grew up. I had many friends who were related to Mart somehow including the Barry's, the Reiley's, the Staunton's and of course the McGettigans. The Metzger's were a big family in the neighborhood too. Helen McGettigan, Mart's first wife, came from a large family and perhaps these other families I knew of were from Helen's siblings and they all shared common great-grandparents. People in those neighborhoods and that time tended to marry within the community.

I enjoy family researching and I like going off on tangents of other people related by marriages. I could spend a lot of time doing this and I intend to keep exploring the neighborhood too.

Reggae All Day - Part 1

Reggae All Day... and all of the night.
Literally. Another mega mix. Part 1. Another recent pandemic project of collecting my reggae mixes together. Each part will have a reggae comment. I've loved reggae music since my teen years in the 1960's when there were songs like Stir It Up, I Can See Clearly Now, The Israelites from people like Johnny Nash and Desmond Dekker. There was some pop ska on the airwaves too like My Boy Lollipop. I didn't know it then but I would soon be hearing it at the source. Of course the mix starts off with Bob Marley.

These mixes also remind me of a bar in our neighborhood called Rude Boys that for several years in the early 1980's only played reggae music or reggae influenced new wave if it had that Beat. Rude Boys has been closed for decades but I drive by it several times a week and I'm always reminded of the good times we had there and this music. I previously wrote about Rude Boys here.

Here is Part 1 of that mega mix. 1-50.

1. Trenchtown Rock (Live) - Bob Marley & The Wailers
2. Concrete Jungle - Bob Marley & The Wailers
3. Stepping Razor - Peter Tosh
4. Rasta Man - Bunny Wailer
5. Funky Kingston - Toots & The Maytals
6. One Cold Vibe (Couldn't Stop Dis Ya Boogie) - Third World
7. Feelin' High - The Equators
8. See Them A Come - X-O-DUS
9. The Ghost - Burning Spear
10. Steppin' Out - Steel Pulse
11. Youth Of Eglington - Black Uhuru
12. Police & Thieves - Junior Murvin
13. Book Of Rules - The Heptones
14. Rivers of Babylon - The Melodians
15. Back To Africa - Aswad

March Madness 2022

The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament began this week and one of the first round sites this year was once again Buffalo NY. Round 2 begins today. I watched a few games on TV the past couple of days.

I really do miss all those tournament games Sean and I went to over the years. We would always have great seats in the 100 level because of my being a Canisius College basketball season ticket holder. Downtown Buffalo was always an amazing scene during those tournament weekends and we saw a lot of great games. The subway rides to and from the games were full of people going to the games and most of them from out of town coming from the various hotels. The tournament was a big deal for Buffalo. Restaurants and bars were full for the entire weekend.

Our ticket package gave us six games. The first day was always a Thursday or Friday and would include two sessions of two games each. Then there would be a 90 minute break between sessions and the crowds would descend on the area restaurants for a quick meal. Then there was the evening session of two more games. Getting something to eat was crazy and hectic and sometimes we would take the subway up to Allen Street and go to one of the restaurants there instead of fighting the crowds downtown.

We went to the tournament in 2000, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2014 and had a wonderful time together each weekend. The tournament was last in town in 2017 but I war retired and no longer a season ticket holder at Canisius and didn't go to any games. I always have enjoyed watching the tournament on television every year and it was very weird when it was cancelled in 2020. Last year's tournament was held entirely in one location because of the pandemic. Very strange but at least they were able to have the games. This year things seem to be back to normal.

The tournament is scheduled to return to Buffalo again in 2026.

Rude Boys Cafe

Rude Boys was a reggae bar and restaurant in Buffalo during the early 1980's that was located on the corner of Starin and Hertel avenues. Over the years there had been many different restaurants at that location but none of them lasted very long. Maybe it was the lack of parking. The building has been empty for several years now and of course the pandemic hasn't helped.

For a brief time it was the Rude Boys Caribbean Cafe from about 1979 to 1982. Becky and I went there many times. The music was great but the place was cramped and often uncomfortable. There were many times where we would be standing around by the huge fish tank listening to music and talking with friends. We always enjoyed the music which was all reggae or reggae influenced New Wave. Lots of ska and dub too. There really hasn't been anything like it in the past forty years. It was unique. It was also sometimes called Rude Boys Roots Rock Cafe.

We would usually go there late at night and not for dinner although I do remember eating there once. Of course this was all before we had the kids.

We drive by this empty restaurant building all the time. It brings back memories.

I was putting together a reggae music mega mix recently which got me thinking about Rude Boys.

How I Spent St. Patrick's Night 2022

I spent most of the late evening researching my Irish family tree on Ancestry while drinking some beers and listening to a mix of science fiction themed songs from my collection playing loud while wearing headphones. Good times after spending a lot of my day getting and installing new phones and a new phone carrier. Fun. Wow.  Becky was watching Brit Box crime shows. Later in the night I watched some NCAA Tournament basketball.

Earlier today I was coming back from the phone store and I was driving down Hertel Avenue. I guess happy hour had started because all of the bars had their outdoor patios overflowing with people wearing green clothes and hats. Lots of people in green walking down the street too. Luckily it was a very nice warm day too.

I've never had green beer in my life and I really have not worn anything green on St. Patrick's Day in many decades. I've always considered going out drinking and partying on St. Patrick's Day to be amateur hour. Maybe it was growing up in a Philly neighborhood full of Irish or Italian or black people and all of the Irish activities that happened in our school. I've never liked going to the St. Patrick's Day parade whether in Philly or in Buffalo. It always seemed like a big excuse for pubic urination. All this coming from a person whose sister had a DNA test of 97% Irish. So I guess I'm a lot Irish too. My time spent recently doing genealogy has shown that too.

New Phones

I had been putting this off for over a year now since I've been thinking seriously about getting new phones for me and Becky. We've had our Samsung S6 Edge phones since early 2016. They were way overdue for replacements.

I finally got very serious about getting new phones this week and today we have brand new Pixel 6 phones from Google and new phone service from T-Mobile.

I first spent a lot of time online comparing different phone service plans. I was very disappointed with Verizon which we have been using in one form or another for over 40 years but they would not give us any kind of discount to improve our phone service. In fact they just kept ripping us off and I recently discovered some new protection fee they had added on without clearly telling us which added another $30 a month to an already overpriced bill without unlimited coverage or service and only 3G. Well, we decided no Verizon anymore but ATT wasn't any better. No senior discounts either.

I spent hours online looking at different phones and comparing features and costs. I was shocked at how expensive phones were these days. Most of the good ones were at the very least $600 and many were significantly more. It also seemed that the ones with lots of data storage space and access to the fastest 5G service were the most expensive. Now we are certainly not power phone users but I did want some kind of upgrade of service and not just a new phone that we didn't have to constantly put on a charger. I wanted some unlimited data, access to a fast service and maybe some significant storage on the phone so I did have to constantly be deleting photos to make room for taking more of them because we liked taking pictures of our grandkids and other stuff too.

There certainly were lots of options out on the market but I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a couple of phones so I had a very short list of what were considered good phones for under $200 but they were all with a lot of limitations.

It turns out the only place I went to for looking at phones and plans was the T-Mobile store on Delaware at Kenmore. That was all it took. The folks there were very nice and informative but what really made my decision so much easier was the nonpromoted sale they had on the Google Pixel 6 phone which retails for $599 was on sale for new customers at $99. That was a game changer along with their special for seniors on their mid level service program Magenta 55+ which I had researched and was already interested in.

So we ended with T-Mobile and one of the reasons was a significant discount for seniors over 55. The staff was very helpful and when I was there yesterday I made an appointment to come to their store today at 2:15. Well, when I got there it was very crowded and it took nearly a half hour before I could begin the process of setting up an account and getting the new phones. They also had to send someone over to another store to pick up two of the Google Pixel 6 phones that were on sale because they no longer had any at their store. They were back with the new phones a half hour later and that time was spent setting up an account with T-Mobile and closing our account with Verizon which would actually take a couple of days to completely shut down. Yea!

It took more time to do the phone setups which included transferring all the data from the old phones to the new ones. I had to complete some of Becky's phone setup later at home because I didn't know her Google account password. I didn't get home from the phone store until a little after 4pm but happily we had our new phones.

Becky ordered a couple of phone cases on Amazon and also a couple of new chargers since these phones used the USB-C cables rather than the ones we had with our old phones. I'll also order an adaptor later. I was able to charge our phones with the cables that came with the phones connected to the laptop. They also worked with our wireless charger.

There is still a lot of tweaking to do and some getting used to the new phones but were happy so far with everything and we are paying a lot less money for our phone service now.

First Garden Day

It was a warm and sunny day today. I was out in the backyard doing some garden work for the first time this season. I started by clipping back some old sweet pea stalks as a rabbit suddenly ran past me which I somehow disturbed. There were more sweet pea stalks in the front garden too that had spent the winter clinging to a holly bush. I clipped and removed them too.

Everywhere I looked I could see the beginnings of spring plants coming up around the yard including daffodils and tulips. We have snowdrops scattered around which is interesting in that Becky has never planted any in our yard. I saw some worms on the ground and where there are worms there are robins and sure enough I also saw my first robin of the season today.

Behind the bushes in the front, down in the corner snuggled between the the stone foundation of the porch and the front steps was a little pile of snow that still existed in this cold, sheltered, dark spot. I was surprised to see any of it around although I did see some snow piled up in a parking lot earlier in the day. But it was a very nice day in the backyard.

I started picking up some sticks laying around the yard. They were everywhere and way too many to pick up individually bending down. I knew I was getting to old for that so I grabbed a rake and went to work. I eventually had six piles of yard debris scattered around the yard that I later put into the trash bin. Fortunately it was also trash day too, well, not exactly since the city picks up our trash tomorrow but I always put the trash on the curb the evening before trash pickup day.

I was out working in the yard with no jacket on. It really was warm and probably in the low 60's. After I finished cleaning up the piles of yard debris I sat in our sunroom for a bit and it was actually hot and stuffy in there. I had recently put a thermometer in there it at first it said 78 degrees. The sun was shining on the room and after sitting there awhile it soon said 80 degrees and I opened the door to let a breeze in the space. It was still a little early to open the windows and unseal the space yet. Tomorrow it is supposed to be sunny and the mid 60's. That should be nice

Becky and I went for a walk through the neighborhood after dinner tonight which is one of the great things I love about the change of season in the spring after daylight savings time. Speaking of which the Senate today voted to permanently have Daylight Savings Time all year long. That really does make sense since the Standard Time of was originally imposed to aid the farmers getting up early. The bill to make the change still needs to go through the House and then get signed by the President. We'll see.

Gassed Up @ $50

Well, actually is was $48.02 but it probably was the most I ever spent on a gas fill-up ever and it was just a little below a quarter tank. I think it was $4.24 a gallon. It is now the fourth week of Putin's Russian war on Ukraine and suddenly oil prices on the world market have dropped after weeks of record highs but the oil companies are keeping gas prices high and still rising. This has all along been extreme price gouging by the oil companies.

Trump and Putin supporting right wing media have been screaming their lying heads off that the rise in gas prices is President Biden's fault as if he somehow took control of the gas pricing from the oil companies. Tell the people of Norway that exports oil from the North Sea and are still paying over $10.00 a gallon that it's all Biden's fault. The ignorance of some American people is astounding.

Med Cruise 1972 - 50 Years Ago

I just realized that it was 50 years ago in March 1972 that I crossed the North Atlantic on my second Med Cruise. The previous time was in 1971. Different ship, different crew but the same ocean. The highlight of the crossing was experiencing the Northern Lights again off the coast of Iceland before heading to the Naval Base at Rota Spain and of course spending some time again in Cadiz in Southern Spain was nice too. It would be a six month deployment in the Mediterranean Sea.

It's interesting to note that during the spring of 1972 that joint Spanish and American naval base at Rota was greatly expanded because of a perceived threat to NATO by an aggressive expansion of the Russian navy at that time. We spent that spring and summer doing amphibious assault landing war exercises all over the area including landings in Greece, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Sardinia, Sicily, Crete and there were always Russian ships nearby.

Tucker & Putin

Tucker Carlson and the traitors at Fox are nothing but mouthpieces for the Russians. In a way it makes sense because they have always been supporters of the American oligarchs so it's not a stretch to see them as throwing their support behind Putin and the Russian oligarchs.

It is not surprising that Carlson is being featured on the Russian propaganda television networks just like here in the US. They love him in the Kremlin.

Even some republican congressmen are calling Carlson "an organ of Russian disinformation". Duh! Now the whining crybaby Tucker wants to sue his critics.

Another No Knead Bread

This loaf is from a popular recipe from the New York Times and is a no knead bread that requires 24 hours to create the bread using a slow fermentation process. It also says to "form your hand into a stiff claw" to stir the dough but of course this is a "no knead" bread but maybe you're supposed to claw your way through it. We had a good laugh over that claw expression.

Becky has been on a serious roll with her bread baking the past few months. They have all been very delicious. This was wonderful with our dinner. Becky made a winter squash soup and the bread was a perfect compliment.

She liked making this bread because there was not a lot of work involved. It was a very old recipe that depends on the overnight fermentation process of the yeast to give it the unique characteristics that make it such a tasty bread with a wonderful texture. It was soft and fluffy inside with a nice crispy crust.

Update: It makes for a really great toasted breakfast with some jam.
