Earlier this week Becky and I decided to drive over to Sean and Ashely's house for the long weekend. We had recently asked Sean which weekend over the coming month or so would be good for them for us to come by and visit. They are the ones with the work schedule not us. Let them decide. The only time we couldn't go was the week of Scott's memorial service that had just finally been scheduled at the end of September. So it turned out the long Labor Day weekend was the best time for us to visit. We thought they might have had plans for the holiday weekend but it worked for both us and them.
We don't usually drive anywhere on the Labor Day holiday weekend. We left a little after 9 am on Friday morning and we planned to stay at their house until Tuesday morning. Friday was wonderful weather for driving across the state. We were expecting a lot of holiday traffic and there was plenty of cars and trucks on the Thruway. There was some very heavy traffic around Syracuse because of the New York State Fair. It was the closing weekend of the Fair. We hadn't considered the Fair at all. It just wasn't on our radar. The traffic was quite as bad after we passed Syracuse.
The rest stop renovation and construction projects weren't as bad as our last trip across the state in July. The construction continues but there were not long lines at the restrooms like the last time. We ate some sandwiches and fruit in the car that Becky packed for us. We still haven't gotten back to our regular travel lunch pre-pandemic routines. There are a few nice restaurants along the Mohawk River that we want to check out at some time.
One of the things that has been really crazy about the new Thruway rest stops have been the Chic-Fil-A restaurants getting the contract. How could that be? They refuse to be open for business on Sundays for religious reasons. People travel on Sundays too. That alone should have eliminated them from getting the contract for operating restaurants on the NY State Thruway. Something odd here. Who got paid off? Well, we would never eat there under any circumstances anyway.
Well, we got to Sean and Ashley's by early afternoon and we were looking forward to a nice weekend with our grandson Andrew.
