Becky and I made it out to a couple of art openings tonight. Both of them were at non-traditional art spaces and not regular art galleries. The first was at the Button Factory on Grote Street in Black Rock where her friend Dave was showing some of his older work. His paintings were all very nice and Becky bought a small one that was a very reasonable price.
The Button Factory is a very interesting gift boutique located in a couple of rooms in the front of a large industrial building on Grote Street surrounded by other industrial buildings some of which are in the process of renovation. We parked down the street in the beginning of a residential area just south of the Chandler Street redevelopment area. We hung out there for a little while and then headed downtown to the next opening on Ellicott Street.
Sean called us and we had a quick video chat with Andrew on our drive. We just talked for a couple of minutes as Becky was driving and I didn't want her to be distracted as traffic picked up as we went through Elmwood Village on our way downtown.
The second show was a retrospective of Michael Margolis' work. We've known Mike since the early 1980's and his work is truly Buffalo iconic. He was showing at the Fitz Book and Waffles on Ellicott on the same block as Toutant Restaurant and Maureen's Flower Market. Fitz had a nice gallery space which is often used for poetry and literary workshops. There was also a very nice outdoor patio space in the back with live music. We ran into lots of people there we knew but hadn't seen in many years. Mike's show was spectacular and brought back many memories of the local Buffalo scene. It was also a very interesting book store and I need to get back down there to browse.
