Halloween 2025

We really didn't know what to expect this year on Halloween because all week the weather forecast was for a cold, wind and rain for the evening. But, it didn't turn out that way. It was cold and it was windy but the rain held back.

Becky bought a lot of candy as usual and we went through all of it although we did hold back a few pieces for Andrew and Autumn coming tomorrow. We had a lot of trick or treaters tonight and we were all out of candy by about 7:15 pm. That's earlier than usual. We also estimated we had a little over 200 kids this year based on the amount of candy that we had available and that we were giving one per kid.

So we dressed warmly and hung out on the porch for about an hour and a half. We had the speaker out there playing one of my Halloween mixes... Rockin' Bones. There weren't as many neighbors giving out treats as usual but Nicole across the had a fire pit set up in her driveway and she and a friend kept warm while giving out treats. It also was a serious attraction for the trick or treaters. Mark next door did not give out treats this year.

We went inside to watch the 6th game of the World Series. LA won and now there will be a game seven tomorrow night. We can have it on while Sean and Ashely are here.

Obnoxious Billionaires in Restaurant

I saw on CNN this morning that a group of three tech billionaires in Korea were in a chicken restaurant in Seoul bought the meals of everyone there for dinner. It was a big surprise to the other patrons and a very big deal was made of this situation of some very rich guys picking up everyone's tab in a cheap restaurant.

I thought it was extremely obnoxious that this was cheered and they tried to make this some kind of example of charity. These guys are billionaires. How about buying a meal for all the children in the country or people struggling to put food on the table. How about doing something really important and charitable with their money instead of making some stupid viral media moment. What a bunch of jerks.

Villa & The Steer

This evening we went over to the Villa Maria College art gallery for an opening of an exhibit by our friend Billy Huggins. It was an interesting drive over to Villa since we haven't gone there in many years. Becky had worked there for about a dozen years in the late 80s and throughout the 90's. Of course we ran into lots of friends there and started off with Brian from down the street who was the chair of the Villa art department for many years including when Becky worked there. And Bill and Mona who were surprised to find out that Becky had worked at Villa for many years. They thought she was only at UB.

So it was a good show and we spent about an hour there before we got back in the car and drove down to Main Street and dinner at The Steer. We hadn't had dinner there since last year. It had always been one of our regular casual dining places. The food was delicious tonight and we will get back to getting there a little more regularly. It was a chilly night and so it was nice sitting near but not too close to their fire place.

I had a nice haddock fish sandwich and Becky had a chicken finger sub. All very good and especially the fries. I had a Peroni on tap and Becky had a Peroni NA. Later I also had a Harp Lager on tap.

Overall a very nice evening going out.

It Will Be Ugly - The Lincoln Project

The post-trump revelations from the conservative strategist and co-founder of the Lincoln Project Rick Wilson said about Trump in a column published this week. He wrote about what a post-Trump world may look like, and what revelations would follow. Here is what he said...

“When Donald Trump dies, the myth will begin to decay almost instantly; his cult will keep the flame alive for a while, but the records will outlive the rally faithful,” Wilson wrote on his Substack “Against All Enemies."
“History will not remember him as a king, or a savior. History will remember him as a small, ugly, sick man who happened to seize great power, who wielded it recklessly, and who left behind a trail of destruction, corruption and cowardice unmatched in American history.”

Sticking with Trump’s health, Wilson predicted that following Trump’s passing, a trove of documents related to his physical and mental condition would be unearthed, documents that would reveal that his “cardiac and mental decline was charted in careful, hidden memos.”

Wilson also anticipated that revelations around the president’s ties with Jeffrey Epstein – the convicted sex offender who died in 2019 awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges – would come to light, and made several startling predictions about who in Trump’s cabinet may be held to account for potentially covering up those ties.

“Epstein’s web of power, blackmail, and sexual exploitation reached deep into America’s elite, and we’ll learn Trump was in the thick of it,” Wilson wrote. “The [Justice Department’s] illegal Epstein coverup and corrupt pardon of Ghislaine Maxwell will unravel, and by the end, [Attorney General] Pam Bondi, [Deputy Attorney General] Todd Blanche, [FBI Director] Kash Patel, and [FBI Deputy Director] Dan Bongino will be in prison.”

Details on Trump’s business dealings, many of which have enriched the president to the tune of billions of dollars, would also be laid to bare following his passing, Wilson noted, details that he argued history would not look well upon.
“The Trumpcoin scams, the garbage social media platform, the grifty deals with foreign powers, the bribes for pardons…all of it will be seen for what it is; a criminal enterprise, a mobster bustout of an entire nation,” Wilson wrote.

“History will learn about the shell companies, the overseas accounts, the backroom deals where American policy was auctioned off like a Mar-a-Lago dinner table.”
Ultimately, Wilson argued that through the wave of revelations following the president’s passing, a clear picture of Trump would be painted: that of someone whose “only interest was control.”

Lawless - Bad Vibes

Lawless: How the Supreme Court Runs on Conservative Grievance, Fringe Theories and Bad Vibes by Leah Litman, 2025.

More trump dystopia but actually going way back further... back to Nixon, Reagan and Bush. Going back to slavery and reconstruction, voting rights, civil rights, etc. A court with a long history of conservative anti-democracy dystopia and christian nationalism. Interpretations that they call "originalist" when for example who had the right to vote at that time.

The book was incredibly engaging and well researched but also amusing at the same time with ongoing references to popular culture. She makes the point throughout the book that this current court considers anything that social and moral conservatives don't like to be discriminatory toward those conservatives because they don't want to accept changes in society that may benefit someone they hate thus they are dismantling equality.

This book covers it all from a perspective of a law professor from the University of Michigan Law School. She is a regular commentor on MSNBC, NPR and other media outlets and writes for The Atlantic, Slate and others.

Another Reason to Hate Fox

The Fox News Media company recently launched a new streaming service called Fox One. This is a new compilation of all of Fox programs including Fox News, Fox Sports, Fox TV, Fox Business, Fox Nation, Fox Weather, FS1, FS2, etc. The service cost 20 bucks a month. It's not expensive but it locks out other sources of programming.

The World Series is a case in point. Fox bought a multi-year contract to exclusively air the World Series and MLB playoffs and they are controlling it tightly. They want everyone to buy into their Fox One streaming service to have access to watching the world series. They are using the series to promote their new program by offering a free trial during the series. I momentarily considered it but there is no way I am giving Fox News any money whatsoever. Ever.

I didn't watch the first two games of the series... well at least in real live time. I did have both games on the following day replay. Then I found a way to watch the games live on my TV antenna. The first night the antenna did not work. I got nothing. No Fox channel showed up and that would be channel 29 in Buffalo. I finally did get it to work on Monday night for the third game of the series but that game is another story.

It turns out I couldn't get to see the Bills game on Sunday because it was on a Fox network streaming service only. Maybe next time I will be able to get it to work on our antenna but who knows.

So now except for the occasional game

No Bills on TV

Tried to watch the Bills vs Carolina Panthers yesterday. It was an away game but for some reason I could not find it anywhere on our TV. Not with the antenna and not with any of our streaming services. Nothing nowhere. It was supposed to be on Fox but when I tried FS1 on Sling there was a different game on.

I couldn't find any Bills game on our antenna. The Bills beat the Panthers 40-9 but I didn't see any of it. Oh well. Most of the rest of the Bills games are scheduled on CBS so I d I should be able to watch them on Paramount Plus.

Essex Dogs - Novel

Essex Dogs by Dan Jones, 2022. Started reading this novel on October 8 and finished it on the 26th.

The author of historical books Dan Jones has been on my radar in recent years but I hadn't read any of his books until now. He writes both fiction and non-fiction and is very popular with both. He specializes in histories of the Middle Ages including the Crusades, the Templars and English monarchies. He also has been a presenter on several television shows on British history.

This novel, Essex Dogs, is his first non-fiction book and was a best seller and I enjoyed the book very much. It was a real page turner of historical fiction and the first novel of a trilogy about the beginning of the Hundred Years' War English invasion of France as seen through the exploits of a group of English mercenaries.

I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in the series... Wolves of Winter.

Butternut Squash Soup

Becky had gone out to the grocery store this week and brought home some fresh butternut squash. She had it in her mind to make one of our favorite soups with that butternut squash and she did. It's Fall and it's time for that wonderful soup.

We had some nice fresh bread to with it too. And of course some hot sauce.

This time I documented her making it with a series of photos. They are going back from the bowl of soup on the table.

(Not) Watching the World Series

The first game of the 2025 World Series was on last night. The Los Angeles Dodgers vs the Toronto Blue Jays. We had watched the playoffs and were looking forward to the series. But. It wasn't on any of our channels. Sling was supposed to have it on it's Fox Sports channel FS1 but it wasn't on. Soccer instead. It wasn't on the Fox local channel on our antenna. It wasn't on any of our other streaming services. Then I tried going on to our TV's internet browser and went to FoxSports.com where supposedly one could view the game if logged into a provider.

After numerous tries I got connected via our Sling account and the game came on our TV. Then it just kept crapping out. We turned off our other Internet devices including both our laptops but we still couldn't get a consistent signal. And the damn "mouse" arrow stayed in the center of the screen. At other times the screen shrunk to a tiny image during commercials. It was an awful experience and soon we turned off the game and watched something else. Well, Becky did. I went back to my laptop to once again look at alternatives to Sling TV.

Meanwhile the Blue Jays won the game 11-4. Addison Barger, a former Buffalo Bison who was just called up to Toronto in September, had a pinch hit grand slam home run. Amazing. I would have liked to have seen that.

Sausage & Pasta

When Becky picked up that sausage at the market the other day she got enough for several meals. I think there was about 6 sausages. So night she cooked up some nice past and then added some sausage along with some pepper and onions. It was great and there is enough for at least one more meal after this which I'm looking forward to.

Some really good bread... Sesame Semolina from Bread Hive Bakery.

Coles w/ Dave & Donna

Earlier today Becky and I decided to go out to dinner tonight or tomorrow night. I contacted Dave with a text message to ask if he and Donna wanted to go out to dinner someplace casual one of the nights. He got back to me right away and said tonight would work for them. I had suggested someplace like JT's or Coles and Dave wanted to go to Coles. They hadn't been there in ages. We agreed on meeting them there at 5:30.

Becky and I got there at almost exactly 5:30 and they were sitting in a booth in the dining room. We all had a wonderful meal. I had their Clancy sandwich with the peppers and onions added. Dave had their Reuben sandwich, Donna had a chicken cutlet and Becky had their Chicken Milanese. Dave and I had a couple of Ommegang Oktoberfest Lagers.

We were there for about an hour and a half but then Donna just had to get back to her dogs at home. Just another reason why Becky and I never wanted to have a dog.

We did have fun going out with them to a casual restaurant and we're looking forward to doing it again and making it a regular thing now that they are both retired.

Sausage, Pepper & Onions

Another classic dinner. Some nice Italian chicken sausage with nicely cooked pepper and onions. A wonderful tomato and cucumber salad and more of that delicious bread.

Septura Brass Septet

Last night Becky and I went to our second Buffalo Chamber Music concert of the season and it was special. Why? Because it was an all brass group. The concert was performed by the Septura Brass Septet which consisted of 7 musicians which is very unusual for this concert series and they were all brass instruments. The group consisted of three trumpets, three trombones and a tuba.

The Septura Brass Septet are from the UK and the musicians are all members of various orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, the London Symphony, BBC Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Royal Academy of Music.

The show was amazing and consisted wildly different and interesting pieces of music. They started out with Ravel and then Debussy. Then it was George Gershwin and Scott Joplin. Very brassy but not very jazzy. Loud too.  They ended with Gershwin's An American in Paris. The whole thing was a showcase of a trans-Atlantic relationship between artists from different continents and different musical worlds. A blend of American Jazz and French Impressionism. It was all very entertaining.

Trump Shits on America

Trump's response to the protests about his regime shows how he really feels about the American public. This AI video was actually posted by the orange turd on the official White House social media account.

Now he is being called President Poop and he responded to the No Kings Rally like a mad king disgracing the office of President. He is a degenerate.

As a veteran I found it disgusting and insulting that he had himself flying a military jet. He was a draft dodging coward... and still is. And he has himself wearing a crown. What a jerk.

Then he has the military jet spewing feces all over the people throughout America using their 1st Amendment Rights to peacefully protest his illegal and hateful policies. It must be his own shit coming out of his overflowing diaper too.

A link to the AI video here.

Delicious Leftovers

We love using up our leftovers and some of our favorite meals have been from clearing out the refrigerator. This nice meal consisted of some of that great chicken put into a sandwich along with some tomatoes from the backyard. Also some of those wonderful pan fried potatoes from the other day. And a nice bowl of leftover chicken noodle soup. Loved it all.

The bread was delicious too.

Surprise on Our Walk

Becky and I went for a walk this evening after dinner and left the house around 6 pm. Earlier today we saw several families walking down our street in Halloween costumes and assumed that maybe the St. Marks school had a party for the kids. Then we were walking down Jewett Parkway toward the Martin House and noticed the neighborhood was all parked up. We thought there must be a wedding or some event there but as we passed we saw more and more cars down by Parkside Ave. We also started seeing kids and parents in Halloween costumes walking towards the park. Then it dawned on us... Boo At The Zoo again.

We decided to walk another block down to Parkside Ave and walk past the Zoo. Well, the whole neighborhood was parked up and the zoo parking was full. There were kids and parents in costumes everywhere. It was a big event. We walked past the zoo and down Russell back to our house. We kept passing more kids heading to the zoo. We also saw many family packed cars looking for parking spaces.

I looked at the Zoo's event page on their website and sure enough if was Boo At The Zoo 2025 that was going on from 4 pm to 8 pm today and also next Saturday too. This also reminded me that Katie and Todd were taking the kids to the Philadelphia Zoo this weekend for a similar event. They were originally going to take them last weekend while we were there but the weather didn't cooperate. I did see that today they went to a neighborhood No Kings rally today so maybe they will be going to the zoo tomorrow.

David Grisman - Kitchen Listening

An evening listening to the amazing mandolin music of David Grisman. He combines bluegrass, folk and jazz into something he calls "dawg music". We started off with the David Grisman Quintet album from 1977 and then followed that with his Hot Dawg album from 1978 which has always been one of my favorite records. I just hadn't listened to it in awhile.

I followed them up with a couple of David Grisman Tone Poem albums from 1994 and 1995. They are acoustic albums with Grisman on mandolin with guitarist Tony Rice and Martin Taylor.

These albums made for a very pleasant experience and a blast from the past too.

Becky's Classic Chicken Noodle Soup

Today Becky made her first soup of the Fall season and it was something for my cold... something the doctor ordered. Her classic chicken noodle soup with delicious fresh carrots too. The noodles were Pasta Reggia's Ditali Rigati from the Co-Op. She got a nice loaf of Heildelberg French Peasant bread. The soup was amazing. So good.

It has been a very beautiful day today... sunny and relatively warm. I was out in the yard working on raking up and bagging leaves and black walnuts. This wonderful soup was just a perfect follow-up.

Chicken & Potatoes

Becky had also bought some nice chicken the other day at Dash's and so this evening we had some of that delicious chicken along with more of that wonderful broccoli but with carrots too. And of course some of her leftover potatoes. Sure do love those leftovers.

That chicken was really special.

High and Dry - Songs 1995 FV

Jumped another decade to 1995. Not one of my favorite years for music overall but I could certainly fill a few CDs worth of mixes of some of my favorite songs in my album collection from that year along with some hits and some deep cuts. The first group of songs here really kick ass.

This is the first mix in the series. An hour and a half as usual and available on Spotify too. Radiohead in the pic.

Nikki Plays Beethoven

Nikki is playing Beethoven today at the Buffalo Philharmonic and I'm missing it because of my bad cold. Becky is going with Dave who can't pass up a good deal with these best in the house tickets in the middle of the front row of the balcony. Great seats.

This Friday morning show at 10:30 am has the first chair violinist Nikki Chooi of the Philharmonic performing a special program playing Verde, Tchaikovsky and Beethoven.

I would be coughing and sneezing throughout the program. Donna has a bad cough too. Oh, well. Dave and Becky will have a nice time.

More Burgers & Comfort Food

Burgers from Dash's are always good. Especially when alongside Becky's delicious pan fried potatoes along with some Trader Joe's sriracha BBQ sauce. This time we also had some wonderful very fresh and gently steamed broccoli. Another one of Becky's fantastic easy to make dinners.

Thinking of burgers... I haven't had a burger at a restaurant in many years and a not a fast food burger in decades.

Careless People - Facebook

Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism by Sarah Wynn-Williams, 2025.

Another MAGA Dystopia Book.

This fascinating book was mostly about the disfunction of Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook as told my an ex-employee in upper management. The book has become a best seller despite the legal efforts of Mark Zuckerberg and Meta to block the author from publishing her book. More Facebook censorship. It's a tale of how things have gone terribly wrong with social media in the last decade.

The author Sarah Wynn-Williams was the former director of public policy at Facebook and she sure had a lot to say about that company and the people in charge. It certainly was a critical account of the internal corporate culture and decision making process during her time with Facebook.

The book goes into very critical detail concerning Facebook's response to global social political events around the world including genocide, human trafficking, teen mental health issues and Mark Zuckerberg's alleged efforts to provide China with censorship capabilities. The author also describes the many sexual harassment and other harmful workplace behaviors of several senior staff executives.

It also goes into detail describing the Facebook support given to Trump in the 2016 election and it became obvious that he would never have won without the misinformation support from Zuckerberg. It was enough to make him want to run for president himself especially how he saw how much trump has enriched himself and of course there is never enough money for Zuck.

He also cheats at board games with is staff to ensure he always wins.

I previously read Broken Code... another MAGA Dystopia Book about Facebook.
