Yesterday I was sad to hear the Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir passed away at age 78. Here is a photo of him in 1968 around the time I first saw the band at the Electric Factory in October 1968. I was 16 at the time and he was 20. The Amboy Dukes and Edison Electric played too. I remember that show vividly. The Electric Factory was a small rock club located downtown in a former tire warehouse that didn't hold a lot of people for a show. I went there many times in 1968 and 1969 and saw a lot of bands.
I saw the Grateful Dead again in December 1968 at the Spectrum along with Steppenwolf, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sly & The Family Stone and Iron Butterfly. I would see the Grateful Dead six times between 1968 and 1974 and then never again. I guess I wasn't a dead head but I do have a little over 20 of their albums in my collection... more than half of them live albums.
