The Tokyo 2020 Olympics came to an end last night or today or whenever it was. The closing ceremony was performed to an empty and a television ready extravaganza. I didn't watch it live but I did catch some highlights throughout the day along with some of the other final events that had happened overnight.
The US as usual led the world in the medal count with a total of 113 medals including 39 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze. China and Japan came in 2nd and 3rd for total medals. Russia had the fifth total of medals but they were there under the name of the Russian Olympic Committee because the nation of Russia was banned from the Olympic games because of a state sponsored doping scandal and rule violations. My feeling was that there should have been no Russian athletes at the games under any guise. Maybe not every athlete participated in the drug cheating but certainly enough did and there should have been more consequences like a total ban. Perhaps then Putin would think twice about the state sponsored cheating and maybe the athletes would put pressure on the government for clean games or go somewhere else to compete.
One of the best parts of the closing ceremony for us was the passing the Olympic torch to France for the Paris 2024 Olympics. They had a wonderful ceremony and event in Paris and it was fun to watch the activities and to envision the games there in the familiar streets of Paris. I could imagine the boating events on the Seine.
Overall it was a fun Olympic games to watch on TV and we did see a lot of it. We had several channels available to us to watch the events but we didn't see the main NBC prime network coverage because we cannot get the NBC local network station on our online services or through our antennae. We did have the Olympic Channel which had all the highlights and special programming along with the coverage on the USA channel and NBCSN.
Anything we might have missed was also available after the fact on the Olympic YouTube channel. We saw enough.
