Jazz Piano: A Smithsonian Collection (1924-1977), 1989
This is another one of the many Smithsonian Collection box sets we added to our collection over the years. This one I ordered around 1990 or so and was the first CD box set I got from them.
I've loved playing this CD collection over the years and have enjoyed putting them all into the multi-disc player and letting the music play for hours.
The collection is a carefully selected chronological overview of jazz piano starting off with the early music of Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and Earl Hines right though to Duke Ellington, Al Haig, Thelonious Monk and on to the modern sounds of McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock.
This is definitely one of my favorite CDs. Especially disc three and four.
