Warm Beer and Cold Women - Songs 1975 FV

Warm Beer and Cold Women and that sounds like Tom Waits telling a story from Nighthawks at the Diner. I saw him perform in a small club in 1973 and it was just like this live album from 1975. Lots of interesting songs here from albums in my collection released in 1975. Some big hits and lots of deep cuts. Lots of favorites too. We always enjoyed playing the albums where these songs came from in our house in Philly during my college years.

So many great songs here. Some interesting covers too.

This morning I enjoyed this incredible cello player and some of her amazing interpretations of rock songs... Kashmir, Lithium, Heroin, Little Wing, Lazarus, Wish You Were Here, etc. TranceClassical, Uncovered, Blackstar & Philip Glass.

Dinner at Cafe 59

Tonight we had a wonderful late dinner at Cafe 59 after we left Becky's art opening a little after 8 pm. We had a great meal and service as usual which is why this is one of our favorite restaurants. We were also seated at our favorite table next to the front window in the dining room. I had their Harvest Wrap for dinner and Becky had the Chicken Finger Wrap.

Had a couple of nice brews on tap too.

Art Reception @ Book Arts

This evening Becky had her art reception opening at the WNY Book Arts Gallery. She had to be there from 5 pm until 8 pm. We had a wonderful time and there were a lot of people who showed up for the opening. Lots of family and friends and members of the art community.

The show was hung very nicely and there was plenty of room for people to mill around and hang out. There was also the store area and the printing area in the basement for people to check out... which they did.

I had to sit down every now and then because of the pain I was in. Eventually I took a seat next to the bar and hung out with Mike who was tending the bar for the evening.

Jazz Piano - Kitchen Listening

More Kitchen Listening. This time Jazz Piano: A Smithsonian Collection, 1989. A 4 CD compilation of jazz pianist from 1920's to 1980's. Relaxes me all day.

There was a time in the late 1980's and early 1990's that Becky and I were acquiring a lot of music from the Smithsonian Collection. We had several box sets of vinyl records and then moved on to the CD sets when they became available. I think this was the first CD box set we got from the Smithsonian.

I wrote about those Smithsonian Collections here.

Loading Artwork

Today we had to get Becky's artwork down to the gallery at Book Arts for her upcoming show. I was not really as helpful as needed because of my ongoing abdominal pain which we are trying to figure out so I had to take it somewhat easy.

And then there was the car problem. We had a small rental car as our car was in the shop to get repaired from the getting stolen incident. Dave came by with his car to help take the artwork to the gallery. We loaded his car up and he and Becky went downtown to Book Arts. We also loaded some of the artwork into the rental car and I drove that down.

Overall it went very well and we got the show down there for the installation. Dave went back home and I did too. Becky stayed with Mike from the gallery to install the show. I came back down a little later to pick Becky up and take her home. There were several pieces that came back to the house with us but overall about 25 pieces that were installed in the gallery.

It was a busy day. Becky worked hard getting ready for it including a lot of framing.

Car Stolen - That Tic-Tok Challenge Again

Woke up to a phone call at 7am this morning. It was from an Erie County dispatcher who said they believe they had Becky's vehicle that had been stolen. I said I didn't know anything about it and then looked out the front window down at the driveway. It was empty. Our car was gone. He told me the car was found in Amherst near Main and Kensington and to call the Buffalo Police.

I dialed 911 and was connected to our precinct and they said our car was found and they would take me to it to identify it. They said it could be driven. I got into the back of the police car and they took me to my car which was sitting in the middle of a side street near the intersection of Main and Kensington. The car was running. It was a mess and the ignition column was torn apart just like last time. There was a lot of junk in the car from the kids who took. They also stole the big yellow steering wheel club that was in the back seat. We had stopped clubbing the car early in the winter.

The police escorted me back to our house as I drove the car. I followed them back along the expressways. I pulled into our driveway and one of the officers used a USB device to turn off the engine. They told me there was a significant rise in the Kia and Hyundai car thefts over the past few weeks.

Next I called our insurance agents about the car theft. They had me contact our insurance company Travellers. That was an ordeal. Because I needed to have the car towed to a repair shop they kept putting me into their roadside assistance program. Everything was automated. I finally had to call a third time to ensure I talked with a person and got things going properly. Then I found it easier to set up an online account with Travellers and make the claim in the system. That took a couple of tries but I eventually got a claim in the system. I waited about a half hour and then looked at the progress of the claim... nothing seemed to be happening. I looked deeper into the claim process and found the person who was assigned my claim. I sent them an email outlining what I needed to happen.

I wrote... Hi, I filed a claim this morning concerning my stolen and damaged vehicle. This happened once before in 2023 so I know the process. Our car was recovered and is now back in our driveway but not driveable. We need our car towed or taken from our driveway at 366 Crescent Ave, Buffalo, NY  and taken to Gerber Auto Repair at 2643 Delaware Ave for repairs. There is an Enterprise Car rental on the property which I will use.

Please make this happen. We need the car rental and our car fixed ASAP. Thanks.

I got a call from him a little later. He thought things were moving along fine. They set things up with Enterprise Car Rental and repairs to be made at Gerber Auto Repair.

A Buffalo police detective contacted me to make a report on the car theft incident.

Brian down the street drove me over to Enterprise on Main Street to pick up our rental car which I then drove home. We will have it for the time it takes to get our car fixed.

Travellers sent out an appraiser who looked over the car and arranged with Gerber to pick up the car. Gerber contacted me and we talked about getting the car to them. They contacted Walters Towing who then contacted me to arrange a time to pick up the car. They came by a little after 5 pm and would take the car to their secure facility overnight and then take it to Gerber in the morning. We didn't want to leave the car vulnerable.

Tomorrow I will take the rental car over to Gerber and do the paperwork.

The Last Detective - A Mystery Novel

The Last Detective by Peter Lovesey, 1991.

I just finished this crime detective novel which is the first of the Peter Diamond series. I started it on April 14th and finished it a week later.

I had been reading quite a few mystery/crime/detective novels in recent years especially ones from locations in different foreign cities. I recently came across Peter Lovesey who has been writing British crime novels since the 1970's. I saw somewhere that his Peter Diamond series was outstanding so I decided to jump right into it with the first novel in the series. I loved it. Gave it a 5 star review in Good Reads too.

This series takes place in the city of Bath in England. The author is very good with police procedure and really knows how to describe a crime scene and everything associated with it. The Peter Diamond detective is quite the character too. Another thing I liked about it was the introduction of computers and databases into the crime investigation and police procedures which was all very new in 1991. The author really explores that new twist to the crime novel and it was something I was doing introducing computers at the public library in 1991.

The opening line of the book... "A man stood thigh-deep in water, motionless, absorbed, unaware of what was drifting towards him." Which turns out to be the body of a dead woman.

Funny is What I Do

Our grandson Andrew told us that Funny is What I Do! This kid just turned 4 years old last week and this is how he describes himself. Cracked us up. Yes, he is funny. He's also very loving and smart. He is fun to be around. Sure he has his 3-4 year old moments but overall he is a wonderful little boy and a joy in our lives.

We also certainly enjoy having his little sister Autumn around. She is a cutie.

Pizza & Wings

Sean and Ashley and the kids arrived this Friday afternoon of the Easter weekend. We had a very nice time with Andrew and Autumn although it was a little cold to be doing much outside. We did spend a little time in the backyard.

We were planning to have some pizza and they wanted pizza and wings from Mr. Pizza so Becky and I went over and got some. It was delicious as usual and we had just enough for a nice meal.

Then it was time to watch some basketball playoff games.

Another Coles Dinner

Becky and I decided to go out for dinner this evening after spending the day getting the house ready for Sean and Ashley and the kids visiting us for the weekend. We wanted to relax a little bit so we over to Coles. It seems like we've been there a lot recently. I think this would be the third time in about a month. Not complaining.

I had a beef on weck sandwich and Becky had a chicken milanese. I had a couple of draft beers too.

The restaurant was a little quieter than the past couple of times. Last week we were there on a Friday evening and it was jumping. Today was still very nice with good service and great food.

Fly With The Wind - Vinyl Spins

Vinyl Spins. Fly With The Wind - McCoy Tyner, 1976. A fascinating album... jazz piano with strings. Still sounds amazing. Cool LP sleeve and I have a few of those records too.

Herbie Hancock - Kitchen Listening

I had been listening to some Herbie Hancock earlier this week and needed to more... a lot more. So today I played his 4 CD box set compilation which focuses on his 1970's and 1980's period and was released in 2002. Sounds so good and a very entertaining listening experience.

I've always loved all of the various periods of Herbie Hancock's music and really love his other compilations from the Blue Note and Columbia labels too.

Stevie Wonder - Kitchen Listening

Stevie Wonder albums from the early 1970's makes for some great kitchen listening... well anywhere actually. I was very big on Stevie Wonder in the 70's and got to see him perform in 1974. We played his albums a lot at our house on Seymour Street back then.

Today I took a group of those 70's albums and played them one after another. It was a blast from the past and they sounded so good.

So here is a set of his classic albums from that time...
  • Music of My Mind, 1972
  • Talking Book, 1972
  • Innervisions, 1973

Wes Montgomery Boss Guitar - Kitchen Listening

Wes Montgomery. One of my favorite jazz guitar players. Great kitchen listening. I also played some of his albums in our backyard sunroom too.

I played this group of his wonderful guitars albums this afternoon. 4 albums 1961-66.

I had it on when the installers were putting in our new range hood. I wonder what they thought of the music. Probably didn't pay attention to any of it. Just background noise. But to me it was bliss. I love the jazz guitar playing of Wes Montgomery. The albums I played were all from my collection.

I saw him perform at a small club in April 1968 shortly before he died of a heart attack at age 45. I was 16. He was opening up for some rock and blues bands.

Wes Montgomery albums in my collection:

  • The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery, 1960
  • So Much Guitar, 1961
  • Boss Guitar, 1963
  • Smokin' At The Halfnote with Wynton Kelly, 1965
  • Tequila, 1966
  • The Greatest Hits of Wes Montgomery, 1968
  • Impressions: The Verve Jazz Sides of Wes Montgomery, 1995
  • Roots of Acid Jazz, 1996
  • Wes Montgomery Plays The Hits, 2010

Kitchen Range Hood Installation

It took three weeks, just like they said, for us to get our kitchen range hood delivered and installed. They came by today in the mid-afternoon and had it done in about 20 minutes. These guys were good.

Now we are very happy with the new stove and the range hood with the fancy lights and the wonderful fan.

It was nice to get rid of the portable desk lamp that we've had next to the stove for many years.

Jupiter String Quartet

Tonight we experienced the last concert of the season in our Buffalo Chamber Music series. It was wonderful as always. We enjoyed it very much and we're looking forward to next season after seeing the brochure for the 2025-2026 series tonight.

The Jupiter String Quartet played tonight and the first half was spectacular with a Haydn string quartet followed by an interesting modern piece by Caroline Shaw. After the intermission there was a Brahms string quartet.

As usual we saw lots of people we knew including several neighbors.

It was a cold night but no snow or ice. We parked in our usual area and enjoyed the walk back and forth to the music hall.

Icelandic Sounds - Kitchen Listening

I spent the morning listening to the haunting music of the post-rock Icelandic band Sigur Ros. Three of their albums on the stereo lasted a little over three hours of blissful sounds and cerebral voices.

  • Agaetis Byrjun, 1999
  • ( ), 2002
  • Takk..., 2005
I could have kept this going all day playing the rest of their albums in my collection but I'll save those for another time.

Bunny Hops

Earlier this evening Becky and I saw a couple of bunnies playing in our front yard. They would sit there chomping on some grass or something then suddenly hop up and charge each other. It was hilarious to watch and we stood there at the window for some time being highly entertained.

Later in the dark they were out there still doing the same playful hopping around.

Empire Records - Film Favorites

Film Favorites. Empire Records, 1995. I spent a lot of time over the years hanging out in record stores especially as a young person just like the people in this movie.

It wasn't very successful when it was first released but has gone on to become a cult classic. It had a nice soundtrack of mostly 90's music too.

I saw it when it first came came out and I should see it again sometime.

Ashley Visit

Yesterday we had a surprise visit from Ashely. She was coming into town to help her uncle who was being transferred from a hospital to a rehab center in the Southtowns. Sean called us in the morning to ask if it was alright for her to stay with us Friday night and she would drive back on Saturday. Of course we said fine.

We had reservations for Coles on Friday evening at 6 pm so we let Ashley know that we could add her to the reservation if she wanted to have dinner with us after she was done with her uncle. It turned out that she was running late with what she needed to do and she would not be getting to our house until 8:30 or 9 pm.

She had to first stop by the hospital and get the house keys from her uncle. Then go to his place in Cheektowaga and get some of his personal stuff to bring to the rehab center. He was being transferred there from a medical transportation service and things were running late. She was able to have something to eat that her friend Mel brought over to her.

So quickly gave the house a quick cleaning and put some clean sheets on the guest room bed. Then we went over to Coles for dinner and we were back by 7:30 pm.

Ashely showed up around 9:15 pm with a vase of flowers. Then we hung out for awhile watching the women's basketball tournament and doing a lot of talking.

This morning we had some breakfast and talked more. She had a lot to do today before driving back home so she left around 10 or so. We had a short but intense visit with her and looking forward to her coming back in a couple of weeks with Sean and the kids.

Coles for Dinner

Tonight we went over to Coles for dinner. It was a Friday night so we had made reservations for 6 pm. Since Ashley was coming over to our house later tonight we went to Coles a little early at 5:30 pm. We got the last booth in the bar area although there were still several tables there. The place filled up very quickly especially the big dining room.

We had a wonderful dinner and had a great time. We don't usually go there on the weekends and it was really hoping. We often go on Thursday evenings. I had a fish fry which was delicious as was the coleslaw and fries. I actually finished the whole dinner plate which is very unusual. Becky had a Buffalo chicken finger wrap.

I also had a pint draft of Ithaca Flower Power IPA and then an Abita Purple Haze which I hadn't had in a while.

We enjoyed our evening there and we were amazed at how many families with small children were in the pub. It was fun to observe. The place was incredibly crowded.

Then we were off to go home and wait for Ashley to come over and spend the night with us.

Nashville - Film Favorites

Film Favorites: Music. Nashville, 1975. Robert Altman. Many great moments in this movie. Cool soundtrack too. Mainstream country-western Nashville despised the movie because Altman did not use them or their songs.

However, it was a very entertaining movie. A comedy-drama with multiple story lines. I liked to odd political presidential election attempted assassination subplot.

The Byrds - Kitchen Listening

I've always been a big fan of The Byrds and I've loved all of their albums. I especially like listening to this 4 CD box set they released in 1990. This was one of the first CD box sets I acquired. Each CD in the set has it's own title... We Have Ignition, Cruising Altitude, Full Throttle and Final Approach.

I saw them live at their peak in 1967. Then a couple more times in 1969 and 1973. I have their music scattered throughout my mixes. I especially liked their interpretations of Bob Dylan songs which of course they did right from their very beginning. Also my foray into listening to country music was hearing their album Sweetheart of the Rodeo in 1968.

The Byrds in my collection:

  • Mr. Tambourine Man, 1965
  • Turn! Turn! Turn!, 1965
  • Fifth Dimension, 1966
  • Younger Than Yesterday, 1967
  • The Byrds Greatest Hits, 1967

Chinese Noodles & Chicken

Becky made some nice Chinese noodles and chicken in the wok this evening. It was delicious. She hadn't done this in awhile.

This was a wonderful dinner. We like using the Gomashia sesame salt rice seasoning with it too.

String Driven Thing - Vinyl Spins

Vinyl Spins. String Driven Thing, 1972. One of my favorite folk rock bands of the early 70's. Got to see them in concert then too.
