Yesterday Becky and I watched a segment of the CBS morning show featuring Merry Clayton that was highly entertaining and informative. It also featured some of her new album that was recently released Beautiful Scars. We listened to the album today on Spotify and it was amazingly good. She has always been a terrific singer. On the show they also showed some clips of her singing in the 2013 Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom which was about background singers and their contributions to the music industry. I will need to track down that film and see it soon.
I remember her mostly from her wonderful singing on the Rolling Stones song Gimme Shelter in 1969. She really made that song so special with her soaring voice in her duet with Mick Jagger.
She has sang as a background singer for many other artists including Ray Charles, Joe Cocker, Ringo Starr, Neil Young, Della Reese, Tori Amos, Carole King, G. Love and Special Sauce, Coldplay, Phil Ochs, Tom Jones, Linda Ronstadt and others.
