The Corrosion of Conservative: Why I Left The Right by Max Boot, 2018
Read this in December 2018.
A surprisingly strong defense of democracy from a formerly staunch conservative with a long history of promoting right wing causes for the conservative Weekly Standard among other publications. Max Boot has had a strong reputation as a textbook conservative but gradually became disillusioned with the Republican Party after the election of Trump.
This book outlines the racism, nativism, xenophobia, voter repression and attacks on democracy by the current administration and the Republican Party that supports the policies of the president. I found the book a little bit shocking coming from a man with the long history of Boot. It has given me some hope that not all republicans are traitorous toadies that support Russia over American career officials. Boot describes the trumpism as a dystopian science fiction television show.
He describes his ideological transition from a movement conservative to a man without a party. It was a fascinating story of being a young conservative in the 1980's and seeing the republican party evolve into a trumpists in this well written book that describes his personal journey through a changing political landscape. It covers a lot of territory. He comes across as thoughtful and insightful never trumper writing in a smooth conversational tone. I enjoyed this book very much.
