Otis Redding: An Unfinished Life

Otis Redding: An Unfinished Life by Jonathan Gould, 2017

Read in January 2018.

This was a wonderfully well written book that not only provided a definitive account of the life and music of Otis Redding but also provided a social history of the time and place where this all occurred. The book is the first comprehensive portrait of the singer's background, upbringing and professional career.

I really got a sense of the race issues that divided the white and black popular music of that time and the gradual merging of the music. The book is also a history of race and music in the America of the 1960's and the social struggles, racial tensions and everyday challenges. It was also a portrait of the South. A fascinating book.
