God's Pocket by Pete Dexter, 1983.
Read this very quickly in late August 2015.
This book came highly recommended to me because I came from Philadelphia where this murder mystery novel takes place in a working class neighborhood. It was everything I was expecting. I couldn't put this book and was totally entranced.
Dexter was a former newspaper columnist in Philadelphia who became a novelist writing about the nasty underside of Philly. He himself hand some bad personal encounters with the local mob and neighborhood gangs because of his newspaper articles.
This is the first and only one of his novels I've read but I'm looking forward to reading some more of his work.
