Vinyl Spins - Roches

Went upstairs to listen to the first Roches album from 1979 and mourn Maggie Roche who passed away earlier this year at age 65.  I loved the sweet and unusual harmonies of the three Roche sisters. We saw them perform at the old UB Norton Hall in 1980 or 81. I have most of their group albums and many of their various solo and pair albums too. They were fun and the singing sounds so warm on vinyl. Their last album was the wonderful Moonswept released in 2007.

Here is a taste of their quirky harmonies.

Vinyl Spins - Sandinista!

I bought this album at Play It Again Sam on Elmwood when it was released in December 1980. It was Xmas present for myself. This 3 LP set quickly became one of my all time favorite albums. Still is and it still sounds great. Getting up and flipping it over, dropping the needle five more times makes it an especially well rewarded effort.

Over the years some folks have argued that there is a perfect single record album buried within this sprawling epic. There are many great classic Clash songs scattered across the six sides but the overall effect is perfect in itself. It was also amazing to follow the double album classic London Calling with this triple LP masterpiece.

I also enjoyed reading the tri-fold lyric sheet interesting titled The Armagideon Times no. 3 which featured hand written but readable lyrics and cartoons about each song. Cool.

The first of six pages.

Vinyl Spins - Singers and Soloist

Back on the third floor spinning vinyl and exploring my record collection. This time I was listening to the Smithsonian Recordings Singers and Soloists of the Swing Bands. These vocalists and featured instrument soloist gave the big bands their excitement and made them popular with young people of that generation.

This is the time that Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young stood up on the bandstand and wowed the audience and also when Illinois Jacquet blew what would later be critically recognized as the first R&B sax solo. I'v always liked many of the singers of the era such as Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald but realized I also really liked Jo Stafford.

This box set also had six records and contained a very informative book full of photos and documentation about each track.

Brews - Stout Tasting

Lots of good beers that night. Well, except I don't like coffee in my beers.

Readings - Weapons

I found this book to be a fascinatingly scary and convincing discussion on the far reaching and harmful misuse of math to create "big data" that particularly impacts poor and working class people to the benefit of the rich. A must read.

Dr. Evil

Readings - White Trash

A fascinating and well researched academic history of class and bigotry in America that focuses on the white underclass from colonial times to the present and debunks the myth of the American Dream. Reading this disturbing and essential book gave me some more insights into the recent election and how the system is failing everybody through the manipulation of the poor and uneducated by the 1%. Also includes amazing notes and bibliography.

Vinyl Spins - Big Band Jazz

As a young man I had been listening to a lot of jazz for a while and then in my 30's I got especially interested in the swing era music of my parent's generation. During the 80's we purchased several of the Smithsonian Recordings collections of classic music including this Big Band Jazz box set. This was a massive 6 record set that provided many hours of great music from that swing era.

I spent some time this week up on the third floor listening to the old big bands. This six record box set is awesome. We have several more of their vinyl collections which I'll be giving a spin soon.

Readings - The Unwinding

The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America by George Packer.

This was an amazing book that uses journalism to brilliantly describe the sad story of the downward spiral of America and in particular the middle class through the accounts and experiences of a group of Americans experiencing the decline. The stories of these people begin about thirty years ago up and end in 2012. Reading this book in 2017 provides some perspective on the recent election especially since the struggles and frustrations expressed in the book have continued since it's publication in 2013 and have resulted in the recent election.

Confederates in the Attic

Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War by Tony Horwitz, 1998.

I read this fascinating book in January to March 2017.  I have read a lot of books about the Civil War and according to my Good Reads data that number would be 30 books. This one was a little different in that it was about people today who's lives are devoted to hardcore reenacting battles of the Lost Cause, protecting symbols of the Confederacy and rallying people to the Ku Klux Klan in preparation of a coming race war. He explores how some people are still living the Civil War in the Blue State - Red State culture war thing.

This was an interesting blend of history and journalism that explores the mythic South and some weird dark romance with the Civil War from a bunch of racists losers. I wanted to read this book after seeing the controversies developing around the attempts around the country to remove monuments to the traitors who fought against America to preserve slavery. This is the worst of Southern Culture.

During my years in the Navy I spent a lot of time with Southern guys. In fact most of the sailors on my ship were from the South or the lower Midwest. With growing up in a mixed neighborhood in Philadelphia I thought I knew racism when I saw it but I really wasn't prepared for the intensity and depth of the racism of people from the south. It was very shocking and appalling but also prepared me for what I read in this book. Sure, I can believe people are like they were portrayed here because I saw and heard it all myself right from the mouth of southern bigots. They usually didn't like me at first too because I was a big city boy from the North which was why I hung around with a lot of the black guys on the ship. They knew me as a homeboy from Philly as opposed to the usual white crackers crawling all over the ship.

My Transistor Radio

My Transistor Radio

As a teenager I took my transistor radio everywhere I went. It provided a soundtrack for my life. I had an early 60’s Sony radio with a black leather case. It looked very much like the one in this photo but AM only.

I thought it was interesting that the first transistor radios were made in Indianapolis in 1954 and sold for about $50. The manufacturers thought they would sell millions to American families for their bomb shelters. It didn’t happen and then the Japanese copied the technology, built them really cheap and marketed them to American kids. The rest is history.

Goliath - TV Show

Goliath - The TV series on Amazon Prime. We just finished watching the last episode tonight. We thought it was a great show and very entertaining with Billy Bob Thornton in the lead role as a former brilliant but now washed up lawyer in Los Angeles. Lots of twists and turns and a satisfying end to the season. It was recently announced that there will be a second season in 2018.

78 - 45 - 33 - 16

I played an album on my turntable the other day at a different speed just for fun but of course it only had two speeds. There were four RPM settings on the record player in our home as kids which was an endless source of amusement for us playing records at various speeds. Playing an LP at 78 was great fun. We had some 78s around the house but I never knew anyone who owned a 16 rpm record which was extremely slow and sure made our 45s sound weird.

The 16s were created in the mid 50s for some kid records and for blind people because of the very slow speed the record could play for a long time without needing to change it but it wasn't a very successful product.
