Thoughts on that first job

I was filling out my application form for social security today and it got me thinking about my first job. I worked in a machine shop and my duties included going around to the various lathe and drill machine stations and collect the waste shavings or chips but technically called swarf. Often times the chips were hot and flying off the machines. I would shovel them into a bin I rolled around with me. 1968 was an election year and the politicians significantly raised the minimum wage up to $1.60 per hour. I think I started out at $1.25 per hour but that was before I got my working papers because they could pay teenagers less then. I was at that job for a couple of years, trained at quality control inspection measuring the outputs using micrometers and eventually became a lathe operator. I was a Machinist's Mate in the Navy and some years later was a member of the machinist union. I never imagined back then that I would end my working career as a librarian on a college campus.

Backyard M Train

Sitting in the shade with a nice breeze, reading the words of Patti Smith with her singing People Have The Power from her Land compilation in my headphones. Inspirational. One of my favorite recording artists and authors.

I loved Just Kids too. Another great book and wonderful reading experience.

I really do love sitting in the backyard for reading and listening to music.

The Man Who Fell To Earth

I immediately went out saw the film The Man Who Fell To Earth star starring David Bowie in 1976. I saw it a couple of times in the 70's and then again much later.  So the first time I saw this was 40 years ago. I'm due to see it again.

It was a very strangely weird film and David Bowie was wonderful as the alien. Buck Henry was good in it to as was Candy Clark. I had always hoped Bowie would do more films than he had done in his life.

It's a long movie and there are long surreal stretches without dialog. Like other films that Nicolas Roeg has directed... it's not for everybody.

Over the years the film developed a cult following. I was already familiar with some of the work of the director such as Walkabout from 1971 which I really liked and Don't Look Now from 1973.
