Ten Songs
The History of Rock 'n' Roll in Ten Songs by Greil Marcus, 2014
I took about a month to read this fascinating book. It certainly wasn't at all like the many other histories of rock music I've read over the years. This book took a different method to convey the story of the music through extended essays on just ten songs from 1956 to 2008. This was the kind of book that I would pick up and read a section and then set it down for a bit while I digested what I had read. The author uses the songs to tell the story of the music. He has been an iconic critic of rock music and he deftly blends together the old and the new in a very creative mix.
In some ways the authors meanders and rambles through the eras and the music but the book is not conventional and does not follow a particular order. I liked it because it was like randomly selecting music from my collection and trying to make sense of the whole in an entertaining and informative mode. It is not in chronological order and is dramatically quirky which I thought was part of the appeal.
I've enjoyed reading Greil Marcus' rock music criticism over the years but this is the first time I've read one of his many books. I really should read more of him.

The Sixth Extinction
The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History by Elizabeth Kolbert, 2014
Read in September 2014
A very frank, informative and engaging discussion of how humans have altered life on the planet in a negative way that is leading toward a mass extinction. The author discusses the previous five mass extinctions throughout the history of the Earth caused by shifts in the environmental situation and talks about the coming sixth extinction brought about by the industrial revolution.
The author doesn't make judgements but rather presents the information and it is up to the reader to do something about it or not.

60 Albums 1981
Most of the albums I liked here were second and third albums of artist I discovered during the previous few years. Aside from The Blasters there were not many new discoveries and that was a problem. The first New Order was interesting but we were still seeing it as an extension of Joy Division. The first Duran Duran album was OK but knowing how they would evolve kind of lowers there place in the list.
Lots of second albums; X, English Beat, U2, Pretenders, Echo & The Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, etc.
It's a very personal list. No Rush, Phil Collins, Journey, Van Halen, Styx, Genesis, Def Leppard Foreigner, etc
One can never forget the facial expression of Phil Alvin on the cover of The Blasters. It mirrored the intensity of the music inside.

The First Time - Songs 1969
Songs 1969. This is a quieter set. Who can forget the first time hearing the wonderful voice of Roberta Flack on her first album First Take. The Dusty in Memphis album was a revelation just as hearing the new singing voice of Bob Dylan that first time on his Nashville Skyline album.
It was nice to hear another great song from George Harrison on a Beatles album. It's also hard to believe that Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin song got so much radio airplay. Lots of wonderful folk music in this set too. Closes with an all time great reggae song from Jimmy Cliff.
